what's a .sub file?

when i downloaded marvel vs capcom 2, it came with 3 files. an .img, .ccd, and .sub file. What's a sub file? it's like 30 MB so i assume that it's important.

The image is in CloneCD format, and the sub file refers to subchannel data. It is advised that you do not delete it, nor the .ccd file.
