Trouble installing PJ64 v 1.6

When I run the .exe, the installation process gets interrupted by this-

Error 1402- Could not open key- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\CLASSES\.n64
Verify that you have sufficient access to that key etc etc

My account DOES have admin rights. This seems to be a registry thing, and I'm too much of a n00b to want to mess around in there carelessly. Though I did navigate to that location and it says there's an error opening the key. That's as far as I went. Any idea what's up?

its obviously a permissions issue.

right click the key and make sure you have the right permissions for that file.

are you using XP or Vista?

Yeah, with Vista make sure you right-click the file and choose "Run as administrator".

As XP go to the registry editor (start --> run... type regedit), navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\CLASSES, right-click .n64, choose Permissions, and give everything permissions for allow.

I'm using XP

I couldn't mess around with the permissions in the registry because every time I clicked on the .n64 key, left or right, it gave me an error. And there were no permissions to assign, the boxes were all greyed out.

I went into Safe Mode and seemingly resolved this... I got the .n64 looking good. But then after logging back into normal mode, I tried to install PJ again, and I had the same problem, only this time with the .rom key! So I fixed it the same way... and then it's the .usa key.

And the persmissions I set in Safe Mode don't seem to be remembered now. They keep reverting to the way they were, and I'm having trouble with the .n64 again. I don't know what's going on.

I set my permissions for everything I can set them for, but the same problem, now it's moved onto .pal as I ''fix'' the other ones. Wonderful. Is there a different way to use Project 64 that doesn't include all this installation stuff?
