New here! Few questions

Hi all, I'm new here =)

I'd like to play some of my old favourite zelda games, and figured an emulator may be a good idea. I have a few questions though:

1) Is it legal? And if not, what are the repurcussions, and the chances of getting caught?

2) Is there a large virus risk associated with using project 64?

1. Check the laws in your country. It depends on special laws, but downloading an emulator and using it, isn't illegal in any country, only downloading games, that you don't own... so it would be totally fine, if you would dump them yourself.
There are no internet cops, that hunt you till death.

2. If you don't download it from the homepage there's always some risk.
