Direct3D error and plug-in

I just downloaded Project64 and when I try to run it, I get a "graphics error" that states that "Direct3D failed to initialize." Then when I hit OK, another window pops up that says "the default or selected video plug in is missing or invalid."

It takes me to the plug in box. I change the plug in and I get an error that states that "Direct3D failed to intialize with the HAL device and to make sure I have a properly configured 3D graphics card."

I am using a Sony Vaio Desktop (a new one 2005) with Windows Media. I've played tons of games on it and haven't had a problem in the past. Anyone have any idea what I may be doing?

I apologize if this is an elementary question. I am new to the world of emulators.

What DirectX version do you have? Jabos's D3D8 plugin (the one that is bundled with PJ64 1.6) requires at least DirectX8 to work. Or use Jabo's D3D6.

You might need to reinstall DirectX if all else fails.
