Problem with options/menu screens - effects all games pls help

For no reason the menus on all games cannot be scrolled through properly. The best example of this is F Zero X where, when selecting the difficulty, I can only select novice. Trying to scroll down allows me to quickly highlight the options below, but then it pings back to novice! If I’m quick I can highlight expert, but have to keep pressing down lodes and try and time it right. Basically the effect is the same as if a direction button was constantly being pressed.

This is not a problem with my controller because in the game it has no effect, or in other games like Zelda. You would expect the character to keep running in one direction or something. The problem is only on menus and option screens.

This all started when I got Smash Bros - the curser on the menu wouldn’t stay still, at the time I thought it was just how the game was meant to be, even if it was a bit crappy. But then it happened on other games, like F Zero X.

Has anyone experienced anything like this? Is there a way I can fix it? Does anyone have any idea what could have gone wrong? I haven’t messed with any of the settings or anything. This just happed on its own.

    Thanks for your help.

It could only be a controller problem. What controller plugin are you using? If it's Jabo's or NRage, could you save a control profile and host it somewhere so we can check it out?

You're assuming he's using a gamepad of some sort, and that he's got the input plugin configured to use it. It may not be the problem, so don't assume it is.

Guys, thanks for showing interest - I know it’s a bit of a random problem. I will take some screens of settings and stuff 2 show you, I don't think there is a problem with my controller though because I haven’t messed with any settings, unless I've pressed something on the keyboard without knowing.

I'm using a PS1 controller, I have a USB adapter called Venom. I configured my controller so all the buttons are good. F Zero was perfect until I got smash bros - is the menu cursor on Smash Bros supposed to keep scrolling? I'm assuming it isn’t.

What are the things I've put rings around?

Just out of interest - is it your job to help people on this forum or are you just helpful people?

Repeating what was already suggested...calibrate your controller (check the Gaming Options applet in the Windows control panel). No guarantee it'll fix your problem, but that's where I'd start.

Worst case scenario, your pad or adapter is broken/defective. It happens I'm afraid.

Actually, from the screenshots you took, it looks like you've got the plugin configured to use a gamepad but don't have it selected in the list. Under where it says "Game Device" select your controller. Also, yes, make sure the thing is calibrated properly.

I'm going to agree with squall_leonhart and recommend the NRage plugin though, especially the NRage 2.00b.

Deadzone is how far you push the analog stick before it is detected. It's handy for controllers that don't center the stick very well after use.

Thanks a lot guys - I played around with the controller options when trying to have two controllers connected for two player 'Star Wars Racer'. Anyway, I don’t know what I did but the problem is gone now. I think it might have something to do with what slot the controller was in, i.e. player 2 instead of 1. But I don't know. Oh and yeah, I changed 'none' to 'Twin USB Joystick'.
