    wmv stuttering on new system

Since building my new system (see this thread) most, though not all, wmv files stutter terribly. It's like watching a slideshow it's so bad, and the audio stutters as well. Some files run well but are full of video artifacts. This effects windows media player as well as media player classic.

I don't think the software has changed. That is, I'm fairly certain I've installed everything that was installed on the old system (ffdshow, wmv9 codec, same version of media player classic). Other formats, (avi, mov, etc) are fine.

I still haven't completely solved this problem. I installed VLC, and the videos that were giving me trouble in MPC were working great. Problem solved...or so I thought. I was working my way through the rest of my videos and came across some wmv's that were terrible in VLC but played fine in MPC. It's maddening...

    I hate wmv...

Most probably a codec hell... Some players install the codecs they are bundled with (and this results in mess).
My suggestion is to uninstall every codec pack and player you don't really need (or want) and try CCCP.

Edit: I recommend disabling (or enabling) wmv acceleration too (the option should be on the driver configuration of your video card).

This doesn't solve the problem, but perhaps transcoding them might be an option for now? Virtualdub should be able to import wmv and then export as avi I think, as an example.

Ok, seems it was an audio codec problem. I installed the dbPowerAmp wma plugin and those troublesome wmv's are working now. The only codec "pack" installed right now is ffdshow. I have one flv that won't show video for some reason, but everything else is working fine.

K-Lite Codec pack has become a mainstay on any computer I build. Been using it for years and have never hit a file that I cannot play properly. IF you try this and it does not resolve you FLV issue you could try installing Super and convert it to a different format maybe.

I had k-lite installed previously. I'm trying to limit the level of detritus in my system, so it's just ffdshow right now.

This particular flv used to work (when k-lite was installed I'm think), but given that ffdshow is included in k-lite, and ffdshow supports flv, and since all my other flv's work fine... I don't know what the problem is.
