If I am not mistaken USA's primary reason for stepping into Afganistan was to help Russia secure their pipelines in Afganistan / draw pipelines through Afganistan instead of surounding countries, former USSR republics. I know this isn't what you asked fore but I got this sudden need to show my vast knowledge...
