controller adapter help

ok so i got one of those psx/n64 usb adapters and i cant figure out how to make it work. when i plug in the n-64 controller and try to configure it it gives me all these wierd options. i change the controller from none to 4 axis 16 button joystick. when i press the button to change the buttons from keyboards to n64 it kept scrolling through letters with pluses and minuses and stuff. when i plug in the ps2 controller and try it, it only lets me configure the first button i press and it configures it to up on the joystick.
any help is appreciated.
