Another Majora's Mask problem

I just got the next to last fairy in the Snowhead temple (where there's a funny hole in the wall) and walked through the door into the tall central chamber. The guy takes two steps and then the game pauses by itself. It won't unpause. It doesn't have the subscreens up -- it's just paused, nothing happens, no music, and you can't move.

I'd just saved the state. If I restore, the guy takes a step and the game pauses itself again.

How do I return the game to normal? I'm not going all the way back to the last time I saved "the normal way".
