    N64 Controller/keyboard problem

When i load my roms for eg goldeneye i keep geting the message....... "NO CONTROLLER IN CONTROLLER SOCKET 1, PLEASE POWER OFF AND ATTACH A CONTROLLER"......... erm what does this mean? and how do i overcome it without having to use a controller. Id rather use the keyboard, i can play this rom on project64 with just the keyboard but project 64 is a bit faulty (keeps reseting my computer). So please could somebody help me?

when i go to plugins, input settings, i have tried changing the unassigned buttons to the ones i want but it still displays the message. do i have to 'uncheck' something?
    thanks
