I never understood Paper Mario. Here you have 64 bit technology, state of the art 3D graphics, and you release a 2D game as your flagship.

That's what is the interesting part... in paper mario 2, mario can get paper-like abilities, which pretty much is the whole point.
It goes to show to 2d isn't that bad.

The backgrounds are full 3D anyway. The paper thing is to make it stand out, and be something that's amusing.
the extraordinary graphics are part of what makes paper mario so amazing. on a side note maybe the gameplay is 3d as well.
