The Fox (EmuUnlim) v RealityMan (UltraHLE/Jagulator)
..with special guests

<EmuUnlim> INTERVIEW LOG ON...
<EmuUnlim> UNCENSORED.
<Martin`> hehe
<EmuUnlim> Well where can we start
<Lycia> haw.
<Martin`> PG-13
<L_Face> can I swear then ?
<EmuUnlim> no you fucking cant, oops
<RealityMa> now, now... :)
<Martin`> haha
*** Martin` is now known as Martin64
<Lance_mc> uncensored? I almost feel like saying/typing something nasty ;-)
<Martin64> maybe that's better
<Lycia> RealityMa gillar gummikuk
<RealityMa> well, by my watch it is 1 hour and 16 minutes until UltraHLE is 1 year old
- ahhhh :)
<Martin64> Lycia...du är sjuk
<Lance_mc> Lycia: yikes!
<EmuUnlim> Remember guys and gal, this will be a open discussion Email Wars and will
be up on the site tommorrow
<L_Face> Garcon: Pint of Guinness
<Lycia> -Lance_mc-: rofl.
<Martin64> Alright...discussion is open
<EmuUnlim> so if RM, what do you have to say to all you MILLIONs, and i mean MILLIONs
of fans :)
<Lycia> ALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL RIGHTY THEN
<EmuUnlim> (normally who email you for roms)
<Martin64> lol
<Lycia> RealityMan: Whats up with UltraHLE ?
<RealityMa> surprisingly, the rom begging is down to about 1 or 2 e-mails a week now,
generally i just get support e-mail
<Martin64> One question at a time, Lycia! ;-)
<EmuUnlim> Epsilon could not make it tonite he had to go line dancing with sickbits
<L_Face> haha
<Lycia> haha.
<Martin64> =)
<EmuUnlim> RM, is it true that epsilon was indeed Carla?
<EmuUnlim> (his wife)
<Martin64> Support is good. Does anyone ever ask you if the can join "Project
UltraHLE?"
<Martin64> the=they
<RealityMa> hehe, no not at all....although Carla did provide emotional support (+plus
the coffee, beer and food i needed) she is not Epsilon
<L_Face> RM: are you surprised by the impact it had during the year of its release,
which included various mentions in computer magazines ?
<RealityMa> Loads of people ask to join the UltraHLE project. Most tho just want to
have their name up in lights and don't care about the project.
<EmuUnlim> RM: Who was the first person other than you and Epsilon to first try
Ultrahle ;-)
<RealityMa> It does still surprise me, even today. It seems that it was one of
several emulators in 1999 that really brought emulation into the public eye.
<Martin64> yes
<RealityMa> I'm not entirely sure. It may well have been you foxy although I don't
think you had a voodoo at the time. Nope, wait...it was my wife :)
<RealityMa> She just loves that Tetris
<Martin64> hehe...is that so?
<EmuUnlim> i did, i remember shitting my pants when mario popped up on my PC..
<EmuUnlim> i had a state of the art, voodoo 1
<RealityMa> I think most people did shit their pants, including Epsilon and myself....
<Lycia> Haha.
<RealityMa> I also had a voodoo 1 during the project but quickly upgraded to voodoo2.
<Martin64> RM: What did you think when you saw the project progress so nicely? I mean,
you had a fantastic emulator in you hands, wasn't it kind of scary to have the first
N64 emulator capable of running commercial games?
<RealityMa> To be perfectly honest, things were moving so fast during development that
there was no time to be scared. It was when it was released that the fear grew.
<EmuUnlim> I remember RM emailing me during the night asking me to phone him as things
were getting so scary
<Martin64> Yeah, I bet. How about Big N? How long did it take until they found out?
<L_Face> was there a fear of the backlash from Nintendo and other organisations that
could have stepped in (such as IDSA)
<EmuUnlim> im sure there was.
<RealityMa> I believe by the early morning (it was released at midnight), that
Nintendo made their first statements about the legality of it.
<RealityMa> the fear of the backlash really started after the first Nintendo
statements.
<Martin64> yeah
<EmuUnlim> RM: what has changed since then to change your mind?
<Martin64> You worked about 3 months on the project until you released, didn't you?
How did it feel to have to discontinue something you had worked on for such a long
time?
<Lycia> Damn.
<Lycia> I'd be freaked out too.
<RealityMa> After several months I started to regret somewhat that the project had
officially terminated. I felt that there was so much more to do, to achieve. It
was then that I started to talk to Epsilon about restarting the project.
<RealityMa> It was a very sad time when it was discontinued.
<L_Face> how did Epsilon feel about continuing it with you ?
<Lance_mc> About nintendo's quick reaction. You never ever anticipated such a reaction
from Nintendo?
<RealityMa> We spoke for a few weeks on the matter. Ultimately, he decided that he
had other commitments and projects he wanted to do and effectively left the project
for good.
<Martin64> Obviously both you and Epsilon have very good programming skills. Have you
ever been offered a job because of UltraHLE?
<RealityMa> Honestly, we really never even thought much of Nintendo's reaction. There
were so many other emulators on the web we just thought it would slip in and be one
of the crowd.
<Lycia> UltraHLE is god. :)
<RealityMa> Yes, I have had several jobs offers from around the world, but
unfortunately none from Canada which is where I intend to move to this year.
*** lev| ([email protected]) has joined #ultrahletribute
<EmuUnlim> RM: hows are things doing with UltraHLE and will the move delay the
progression?
<lev|> I don't know if I want to be quoted...
<L_Face> dont say anything then lev ;-)
<Martin64> yeah, shut up! ;-)
<RealityMa> The move will not delay progression. I intend to release the new version
before I go.
*** EmuUnlim sets mode: +o lev|
<EmuUnlim> oh btw when are you going ;-)
<L_Face> hehe
<Martin64> lol
<L_Face> you sly old scouse
<RealityMa> Towards the end of the year.
<EmuUnlim> RM: any big changes since the first release?
<EmuUnlim> planned or currently done
<Lycia> Hey lev.
<Lycia> :).
<RealityMa> I don't really like to announce/pre-promise features. However, items
being worked on are a) full DirectInput controller support (incl Adaptoid) b)
increased gfx support, c) increased compatibilty and a shit load of optimisations
<RealityMa> Longer term development includes things such as netplay ;-)
<EmuUnlim> RM: are you prepared for further scare tactics by Nintendo?
<Martin64> Yeah, talking about gfx support...you've decided to give OpenGL a shot. Is
that mainly because you have bought a nice TNT2-Ultra gfx card, or because OpenGL is
easier/better to program in?
<RealityMa> I am aware that they my try to threaten again but I really think there big
issue over the last year has not been the emulator as such but the proliferation of
roms on the internet. As many of you will know most of the large rom sites are now
gone due to nintendos actions.
<EmuUnlim> yeh, nintendo cut the legs of bung, remember that too
<Lycia> RealityMan: Yeah, I noticed that aspect about http://www.emuinfinity.com
<Lycia> THey took their N64.
<RealityMa> Both reasons really. OpenGL is a nice API and is gaining greater support
amongst the gfx card manufacturers. Also, the TNT2 Ultra is damn cool. That said I
did obtain a new 2nd PC today which is going to house my Voodoo card so who
knows.....maybe glide will continue
<EmuUnlim> oooh
<Martin64> yeah, but not only ROM sites. Zach's come.to/ultrahle was shut down because
he had glide wrappers (is that really fair?)
<RealityMa> Who shut them down? Nintendo or 3DFX?
<Martin64> THAT I'm not sure about though
<RealityMa> I think it was 3DFX but I may be wrong.
<EmuUnlim> it was
<Martin64> yeah
<Martin64> either way...the big brother showed their powers
<EmuUnlim> wasnt it to do with creative's 3d card
<RealityMa> Absolutely, although 3DFX don't seem as bothered about it so much nowadays.
<Martin64> How about porting UltraHLE? Have you thought about porting it to UNIX/Mac
or any other OS?
<EmuUnlim> RM: Any support shown by 3dfx since UltraHLE certainly meant it was the
card for N64 emulation
<RealityMa> Porting UltraHLE....hmmm, it may happen one day but it is not a target I
am aiming for right now. If it were ported I think it would go to Linux first.
<Martin64> Yeah, interesting question Fox. Their sales must have doubled :)
<RealityMa> 3DFX did offer to give me one of their latest Voodoo cards but
unfortunately they never delivered :-(
<EmuUnlim> (note THEY did not deliver, get one sent right now 3dfx :)
<Martin64> heh
<RealityMa> Almost certainly it made them something.
<EmuUnlim> RM: would you ever think of making ultrahle commercial?
<RealityMa> No, it goes against the grain of what I believe emulation is. Its a hobby
and no more.
<Martin64> I agree with that
<Martin64> I have not yet payed for an emulator :)
<RealityMa> I also don't personally like what Bleem! and Connectix are trying to
do...I just hope that PSEmu comes back one day and stays FREE :)
<L_Face> thats because you warez them like the rest of us martin
<EmuUnlim> RM: what are your thoughts on the product...bleem1
<Martin64> I do not! ;-)
<EmuUnlim> (note: bleem sold 200,000 copies....confirmed)
<L_Face> 200,000 suckers in the world then
<EmuUnlim> be nice facey
<L_Face> :)
<Martin64> haha
<RealityMa> Technically, the product is very good. Although, several of the games I
have tried on it didn't work too well, I can see that it has long term potential on
the compatibility front....My opinion....it should be free.
<L_Face> yes boss
<L_Face> I tend to agree. Charging for an emu is totally wrong, in my oppinion
<EmuUnlim> RM: do you agree that bleem! had to be commercial as they were treading on
a legal tightrope?
<EmuUnlim> and needed some financial help
<RealityMa> I think that by making it commercial they brought the wrath of Sony upon
them. If it had been released free on the internet then they may not have been sued.
<EmuUnlim> Question To All: Will Bleem win the courtcase YES/NO?
<Martin64> Sure will
<L_Face> Yes
<EmuUnlim> Yes
<RealityMa> Sadly, Yes.
<Lance_mc> yes seems likely, if not..
<RealityMa> I think if they do win, it will open the floodgate for commercial
emulators which may not necessarily be a good thing.
<EmuUnlim> RM: Do you reckon that if bleem wins the courtcase, some other emulator
project may come along and this time LOSE causing new laws to be made?
<RealityMa> Very possible....Emulation, which ever way you look at it or whatever
opinion you have, will always be an immotive issue with the people/companies whose
product has been emulated.
<EmuUnlim> RM: do you reckon emulation should stick to games of yesteryear (nostalgia)
or games of today/recent?
<RealityMa> I used to believe...."wtf, emulate everything". Now I think that next-gen
systems such as Dreamcast, PSX2 and Dolphin should be left alone. PlayStation/N64
and backwards are ok with me.
<RealityMa> The only reason I continue with UltraHLE is because I see it dying
commercially this year, especially with the release of Dolphin in December
<Martin64> yes
<EmuUnlim> RM: Maybe release the next UltraHLE on the day of the Dolphin's release ;-)
<Martin64> What do you think of "underground projects"; emulators that are not
released because the authors is scared or for some other reason. Do they exist, and
if so...should they be scared?
<RealityMa> Heh, it'll be way before that.
<Martin64> make it 'authors are' :)
<RealityMa> I think they do indeed exist and maybe they are right to be scared. Maybe
it is us who should be a little more wary.
<EmuUnlim> RM: hows Jagulator going?
<Lycia> RealityMan: I heard that someone from the emulation scene that remains to be
silent, was going to help you with the GUI of UltraHLE. Any truth to that?
<RealityMa> Jagulator is very well advanced now....although it is on hold for a few
weeks.
<RealityMa> No, no truth at all.
<Lycia> Okay then.
<EmuUnlim> RM: is it showing anything yet?
* lev| grins
<RealityMa> Lev grins for a good reason :)
<lev|> Jagulator.. fucking color god damn son of a ... ARRGH,
<EmuUnlim> quoted: lev grined
* lev| throws some things around the room
<lev|> That about sum it up RM?
<EmuUnlim> cummon RM tell..
<RealityMa> yup......gfx work....color is fuxored
<Lycia> :)
<Martin64> hehe
<EmuUnlim> what game :p
<RealityMa> you'll have to wait and see ;-)
<EmuUnlim> i bet your Tempest...i mean tempted to tell us hehe
<L_Face> hehe
<Martin64> of course he is...
<Martin64> :)
<EmuUnlim> give us a shocker on the eve of last years bombshell
<Lycia> RealityMan: Where do you think emulation is going? Is it slowly dying or is
it
<Lycia> just heating up or is it riding its peak?
<RealityMa> A shocker...hmmmm...don't want to shock really.
<EmuUnlim> I've seen RM, thats shocking enough ;-)
<Martin64> lol
<L_Face> scarred me for life too
<EmuUnlim> you scare kids right RM?
<RealityMa> However, before the release of the next version of UltraHLE you may see a
final ultra.ini for v1.0.0 that covers the entire compatibility list for the next
release
<lev|> Oh my god.. EE, he could crush you into tiny little pieces.
<lev|> Err, EU.
*** lev| is now known as lev|food
<lev|food> Gotta go eat, bbl.
<RealityMa> later lev
<EmuUnlim> he scared me how he smoked 50+ cigerettes in one night out :)
<Martin64> Is the upcoming release totally based on the v1.0.0 code, or are some parts
rewritten?
<RealityMa> I still have that bad habit :-( Not Good at all.
<RealityMa> An large proportion of the new release have been re-written or optimised.
What will be gone from the release is the integral debugger. Sorry UltraFrantic but
there will be no new Frantic for you
<Martin64> So, no frantic then...
<RealityMa> The need for UltraHLP will also go.
<_Demo_> RealityMan, why no debugger?
<RealityMa> Two reasons mainly. a) to help speed things up and b) to stop people
hacking around with UltraHLE
<RealityMa> Another thing missing will be the ability to 'patch' roms.
<_Demo_> How come removing the debugger speed things up?
<RealityMa> removes about 34k of code from the release build and none of debug calls
are made during execution.
<RealityMa> it does speed it up...believe me it does ;-)
<_Demo_> can't you release 2 versions, one with the debugger and one without it?
<EmuUnlim> maybe we should remove RM's debugger, hopefully it'll speed him up on
releasing the new hle :)
<Martin64> Well...then people will continue to hack around :)
<Martin64> haha...I think so too, Fox
<L_Face> isnt his debugger that pack of smokes ?
<EmuUnlim> debugger = cigerettes and drink
<EmuUnlim> sure is
<RealityMa> Sorry, no Debugger :-(
*** Lance_mc has quit IRC (gee.. time to sleep)
<EmuUnlim> bugger off
<EmuUnlim> RM: One year ago....what was you doing?
<EmuUnlim> (Time 23:45)
<RealityMa> Hmmm, I think I was in major discussions and final preparations with
yourself.
<EmuUnlim> RM: Where did u meet Epsilon and what was his part in UltraHLE
<Martin64> What do you think of Nemu64? Do you have any contact at all with the main
coder Lemmy? How about other upcoming N64 emulators?
<RealityMa> We me via e-mail. We share responsibility for UltraHLE.
<EmuUnlim> good question...nemu?
<RealityMa> Nemu64 is indeed a great emulator and is progressing extremely well.
Lemmy and his team have made great advances in 1999.
<EmuUnlim> sure have
<EmuUnlim> wink wink nudge nudge
<Martin64> yeah, incredible
<Martin64> what are you winking and nudging about? ;-)
<EmuUnlim> im just winking about
<L_Face> you mucky bugger
<EmuUnlim> ten minutes left..
<Martin64> yay!
<RealityMa> :)
<EmuUnlim> RM: what has been the most enjoyable aspect of UltraHLE's success
<L_Face> is there anything your not particuarly happy about with the emulation scene,
apart from the obvious rom begging ?
<RealityMa> I've got Mario 64 playing on my other system...You, me and Mario will see
in the aniversery ;P
<RealityMa> I think the most enjoyable aspect of the sucess of the emulator is all the
great e-mails i receive from satisfied users of UltraHLE.
<EmuUnlim> RM: What are your thoughts on the rape emulator and its author sickbits on
his controversial statement recently..
<RealityMa> The only thing I think I dislike about the Emulation Scene is that there
are way to many news sites nowadays. I miss the days when it was mainly EmuUnlim,
EmuNewsService, Zophars and Daves.
<EmuUnlim> i mean site editor, not author
<Martin64> Back in the days...
<EmuUnlim> (i'll edit the last question)
<RealityMa> I think the biggest shame is that Sunset will suffer from it. It had a
lot of potential and possibly still does but it shows the scene in a bad light. 95%
of us are all friends, we get along and enjoy emulation.
<L_Face> you said it would be uncensored - that means leaving it intact fox :)
<EmuUnlim> ok
<Martin64> yeah, uncesored! =)
<Martin64> uncensored even
<EmuUnlim> spell it wright boy
<Martin64> ;-)
<RealityMa> As far as the RAPE emulator goes....ok, the name was contriversial and
maybe should have had some more thought behind it but its ok.
<EmuUnlim> have you heard on the rumour that RAPE and Magic Engine are merging..
<RealityMa> I had not, no.
<EmuUnlim> named RAPE ME
<Martin64> Seriously...why having the name RAPE? It's for hyping only...
<EmuUnlim> hehe
<Martin64> funny Fox
<RealityMa> Seriously, it is in bad taste tho.
<EmuUnlim> it is.
<EmuUnlim> 4 mins left.
<L_Face> 5 and a bit by teletext fox
<EmuUnlim> Any questions before the interview is over?
<_Demo_> RealityMan, how did you meet Epsilon?
<RealityMa> I answered that earlier.
<EmuUnlim> demo. your laggged bad
<Martin64> No kidding ;-)
<L_Face> RM - which emulator will you be keeping a close eye on this year ?
<RealityMa> Two mainly. Nemu64 for obvious reasons and PSEmu....I got a feelin it may
come back for a millenium release.
<EmuUnlim> RM: Any last words before it hits the 1 year anniversary mark?
<Martin64> we're close!
<RealityMa> Not many. Just to say that you should expect a new release later this year
and Thanks to everyone who has supported UltraHLE over the last year.
<RealityMa> how long now?
<Martin64> can't be more than 2
<EmuUnlim> anyway thanks for giving us the opportunity to talk to you on the 1st years
anniversary of UltraHLE :)
<L_Face> 1 minute 30 seconds if going by teletext
<Martin64> Yeah, thanks a lot, RM
<RealityMa> No problem. It was nice to come back on IRC as RealityMan once more :).
<RealityMa> And Thanks for the Support of you guys and all the other emu sites who
have delivere UltraHLE to the masses.
<L_Face> right, whos round is it
<EmuUnlim> yours if your old enough to get served
<Martin64> Face...go by teletext
<EmuUnlim> is it midnight?
<L_Face> midnight now
<EmuUnlim> YIPPEE
<Martin64> HAPPY B-DAY ULTRAHLE
<RealityMa> Happy Aniversery UltraHLE !!!!!!!!
<Martin64> 1 year! Yay
<EmuUnlim> Happy Birthday!
<Lycia> Happy Birthday EmuUnlim.
<Lycia> errrrrrrrrrrr
<EmuUnlim> hehe
<Martin64> :)
<Lycia> UltraHLE
<Lycia> f*** i'm tired
<RealityMa> It's like the millenium all over again :)
* EmuUnlim lets of a firework
<RealityMa> Well, I'm off to sink a few beers guys. Thanks again :)
<Martin64> Wow...incredible Fox!
<Martin64> K, thanks to you
<EmuUnlim> Thanks RM.
<Martin64> Talk to you later
<EmuUnlim> nite all.
<RealityMa> Later Guys.
