I'm using the cheats from the .cht file but they never work. What's the deal?

I am using PJ 1.4 and only the matches appear when I run No Mercy. The menus are almost completely blacked out, and some things like blood don't show up in the matches. I have tried all kinds of graphics plugins but they still don't work right.... the only one that even gets that far is Jabo's...
