Bah, no virus has ever been reason enough to cause me to need a bloatware scanner.
Just don't use outlook express, and don't download everything you see. Hasn't failed me in years.

AlphaWolf: I don't evem ever open E-Mail unless I expect E-Mail and if the expected E-Mail has an attachment I NEVER open it!
and everything I download I give a virusscan first. But then still I get viruses. I once even got a LoveLetter Virus from a LEGAL CD I bought at the store so don't say you don't get any viruses because you never know
Stezo2k:I also use ad aware. BTW, what is wrong with people spying on you? I know that they can see what you have then but what is the problem with that they are allowed to see my pc nothing special expect for a few FBI and CIA documents ;) :P

In the past 7 years I have only had 2 virii, both were back in the day that I used scanners and kept them up to date regularly....guess what? the scanners found neither of them, and my hard disk got trashed. And in the past, outlook express has been vulnerable to virii by you just selecting the email, you didn't even have to read it.
Honestly, I don't see any point :P

Heres one of many bits of advice I can give you to protect yourself: If you are going to download any questionable executable software, do so off of a p2p network, and make sure at least 5 or so people have the same file if its rare (or a reasonable number ratio'ed based on the size of the network), more if its not rare. If it contains virii, odds are only 1 or so people have it.
Also guess what? If you buy software that contains virii, or anything destructive, you may sue whoever either produced or sold you that software for the cost of restoring your data, or if its unrecoverable, the "project" that you were working on which you have already invested thousands of dollars worth of time developing (hint hint).
Play it smart, only the naive need to pay companies for bloatware to protect their precious data.

i dont use any virus scanner any more (used to about 2-3 yrs ago), and hav never had a virus. personally im a lazy person and cant be arsed to install a virus scanner. its such a boring product to buy, and i agree with alphawolf, im just xtra creful with wat i download...plus im not a big email user...although its usually obvious when u hav a virus email.

Two other things you might want to add, spyware is very well known to cause systam instability, and it also can cause your system to run slower than it should (I remember having one called radiate that would cause extreme system slowdowns lasting for 30 seconds every 5 minutes. ) Companies who make spyware don't care what it does to your system, just so long as it delivers the information they want to them. The reason why is because its not a "product" in the normal sense, its code thats designed to be invisible to the user, and be running without their knowledge, so if it runs bad, the user wont complain to them anyways. Building better software costs more money, these corporations are trying to maximize profits, and it wont earn them anything (or enough) extra to improve it, so theres zero incentive to.
