That's impossible. Blame the program your downloading with or/and Windows. You're just seeing that speed when starting a download, but it'll quickly drop to 56k speeds.

Actually, in theory you can reach 7KB/s. 1 byte = 8 bit, hence:

56Kbit/s = 7KB/s.

T3 maybe, but considering it's probably a shared connection, more likely it's OC3 or higher..

it stayed like it for 20 min. that isnt my fastest tho, i got 22Kbs on direct connect for 10 min without dropping. Direct connect seems to be very fast for me, the fastest ive had on anything else is 12Kbs without droping, and that was on kazzaa light.

22kbs, and 12kbs is an impossibility on a 56k modem even when compression is added into the equation.

The only thing you are actually seeing, is the software you are using not working out the download speed correctly.

i know dude. but also i have overcloked my modem connection speed to 115k using registry changes (i got some doc on how to do it on direct connect) so it always connects to 115k.

You can't overclock a modem.

What you have actually done is change your port speed (this is how fast your modem talks to your PC, and not how fast your modem talks to other PCs; on the net).

It doesn't connect at 115k, if it tells you that - that is because your modem drivers are reporting the Port speed rather than the actual connection speed.

Modems operate at a maximum of 56k, which translates to as someone said earlier around 7k per second max. Bear in mind to get that kind of speed your phoneline would have to be perfect - and you would have to live right next door to your telephone exchange.

You're led to believe that by Windows, but it's impossible.

The reason it looks like it's downloading that fast is that sometimes it takes a while for Windows to understand it's downloading. While the download has already started and you might have downloaded 50 kB, Windows thinks "hey, something is being downloaded, I better display a window of the download process. Hey, he's already downloaded 50 kB, let's try to catch up with him!".

So the first few seconds it displays 80 kB/s, but then it gradually slows down to your top speed of an amazing 7 kB/s (if lucky, since that's your theoretical top speed).

7kB/s is the theoretical maximum for 56K. Somehow I don't believe you can download stuff faster than a 512K connection on dail-up. Take the test and you'll get 'ugh' like everybody else on 56K dail-up:

I use dail up for 3 years and never once it went past 5kb/s.

I agree with what martin said entirely, it also does that if you start an unfinished download quickly in IE, (yes IE can resume stuff, but it does it poorly and only works if you do it a few minutes after a download dies).

Another thing that could fool you is compression, Dial up modems and in fact all the internet can send out data compressed as far as I know, I downloaded some file once on dial up and it was going at blazing speed, yeah, it was,

HOWEVER, that was only because the data I recieved was compressed, much like a text file, notice when you download a text file on dial up it is going faster than your connection can go? Compression baby.

I'd test my connection now but I am busy downloading something.

Now, I can go 100kb/s with my current connection, and that is constant. beats any 80kb/s ;)

heh, with regard to the now banned jessman's speed, v.92 compression can make short work of a file filled with 0's, as well as anything else that compresses really well with simple algorithms, like plain text

That's real, real old, check the date of the post. I was on a shared 100Mbit/s connection through my University, and it was completely free. My current connection isn't quite as fast, but it's dedicated 10Mbit/s so it's not too shabby. It's free as well. :)
