View Full Version : Attention: We've got a problem!

As many of you know, vBulletin is an expensive forum software. $85 per year or $160 for a lifetime license. The problem is that I can't afford a new license. I've got $5 left to live on this month.

So well, the only way we'll able to continue to use vBulletin is if you can donate some money for me to buy a license for. A couple of guys in #emulation64 suggested this idea and it never struck my mind. I was about to convert to phpBB but let's try this idea first.

How much can you donate? If you can/want to donate, you can donate to my PayPal account. More on this later. Reply to this thread please. Thanks for listening, everyone. :)

PayPal Balance: $47.15
Received Check: $31.00
---------------------------------
Total: $78.15

/me checks wallet
OK, I could donate around 70€

Martin
May 20th, 2002, 19:30
Excellent! I'd say we aim for the lifetime license so we don't have to worry about things like this next year. :)

May 20th, 2002, 19:49
Maybe you should set up a paypal account for this?

Slougi

Check the bottom of this page ;)

set up a paypal account, i will dispose myself of some cash... not as much as Slougi though (70 Euro ?!?! omg that's more then 60 US $ :!!!: :!!!: you're one rich fella...)

EDIT: ok saw the paypal sign at the bottom of the page... sorry

Martin

Great Ogy. :)

If we can't raise $160 I'd say we go with phpBB. I think $85 is way too much money to spend every year on a forum software only. There are so many other fees I have to pay anyway that you wouldn't believe it (server fee, domain fees).

Ogy: Any chance that you could estimate an amount and let me know? You could send me a private message if you don't feel like sharing this with the rest. :)

I vill donate around 40/50 euros....just need to find someone with a credit card or something for the paypal....if we do go through with this it could take around a week for me to get it since the job centre are turds ;):D

Ruesselschnurps
May 21st, 2002, 00:35
I could donate ca. 20€...but i have no Credit card so donating could be a problem...
I've got also a question: How is the bandwidth of emulation 64 paid?

Martin
May 21st, 2002, 00:44
Cool. :) Thanks everyone, we're getting there. :)

Ruesselschnurps: I'm paying a set fee for the server each month, and we're allowed to transfer 400Gb/month. As for the credit card part, you could do like vampireuk said.

Ogy
May 21st, 2002, 00:58
i'll tell you what, i'll send 20 US $ now, but if people will not donate, and the sum will still be far i'll see if i can scrape a little more...

Ogy
May 21st, 2002, 01:04
ok, 20$ there, lets see how this progresses.

Jaz
May 21st, 2002, 01:13
When I get my credit card, I'm sure I can find something. :)

Martin
May 21st, 2002, 01:40
Thanks :)

Problem is though, that to accept Credit Cards I need to upgrade my PayPal account to a Premier/Business account which means I have to pay fees on every payment I accept. But, there's an alternative. I will sign up with another PayPal account and make it a premier account with which I can accept Credit Card payments. Brilliant! :P

Ogy: I will decline the donation you just sent me and you can send to my other PayPal account instead once that's setup. OK? :)

i'm getting a job this summer, so 20 bucks from me could happen:)

Martin
May 21st, 2002, 02:06
Alright, I've changed the account on the Paypal button on the bottom. It's a premier account so I will have to pay a fee on every donation you send. Ogy: I've have denied your donation. Just send again through clicking the link at the bottom of this page. Thanks :)

Josep: Thanks :) I need the money within 9 days though. :(

Stalkid64
May 21st, 2002, 04:31
I`ll donate something if I can on Friday (pay day)... assuming I can convince my brother to throw the $10/20 on his card. It was going towards a new processor/motherboard combo but this sounds a worthy and urgent cause.

Martin
May 21st, 2002, 06:29
Everyone don't have to donate at once, take it easy on my PayPal account ;). Seriously though, thanks a lot to everyone who's even considering donating. And a huge thanks to everyone who're actually donating, you guys are the best. :)

Also, in case you haven't noticed already, I've posted a link to the ZTNet store where I will get revenue for every hotrod sold. I'm hoping we'll get a few ones sold so that we can afford a lifetime license. Check it out (http://www.emutalk.net/5036)!

Martin,
I'd donate but I'm in the same boat you are. I work for the University of Pittsburgh and they only pay once a month. So my next pay will be to late. Sorry. :(

Macca, Paypal will let you set it up to use a savings/checking account. In fact, they prefer you to use a bank account...

Martin
May 21st, 2002, 17:52
If you can't afford to donate then of course don't take a loan to donate. :P

Listen up people, someone else donated ($10) and I don't know who this mystery saviour is. Thanks though! :)

PayPal Balance: $28.23

We're getting there :)

Yup, Merick is correct. You don't need a Credit Card as far as I know, you just need to connect your bank account to PayPal. :)

A lot of people say they don't feel like donating since they don't have a Credit Card, or they don't trust or want to use PayPal. In that case, send me a private message and I'll give you my address, so that you can send me a money order. :)

I think he needs the money or his board gets toasted whatever the bandwidth usage. I happen to have 1250 GBP in my bank account (I got it legally but don't ask how). I think I'll make a substantial donation. If only to make sure the NEmu and 1974 authors have one less thing to worry about...

A little donation would be excellent :)

I don't know who picked up the problem as being bandwidth or server space related, but it's neither. The problem is that we need a new vBulletin license that costs $160. :P

btw. there's gotta be 16 people on here that can pay $10 and if there isn't then the other of you all suck!

sorry, but my industry (drug traficking) has been hit badly by the crap economy instigated (in a typical fashion) by our latest republican moron. otherwise i pitch in more!

Well, contrary to the claims of eBay and quite a few other places, paypal does not accept my type of card (bastards...)
I`ll try convince my brother to throw a donation on his card. Probably just $10-20 (paid less than expected - bastards...), but hopefully it`ll be worthwhile.:emutalk:

Help me with the math, this can't be correct. :!!!:

Emutalk has on average about 3000 unique visitors per day; 3000 different people browse it every day (well, even more if you count in that some might have multiple personalities.). 4 of these care enough to keep vBulletin (so far anyway). Roughly, 99,867% of our visitors would rather use some other board software, or they don't care enough to keep vBulletin or don't have any money to donate.

That's interesting. Let's go with WWWThreads (http://www.zophar.net/wwwthreads/wwwthreads.php), shall we? It would mean a lot less server load and it would save a lot of bandwidth. And it's free! Excellent! :colgate:

I did some more calculating and discovered that I have paid $1400 in server fees since August last year when I got the server. That might be peanuts to you, but I'm a college student and don't have a ton of green, so it's a huge amount to me. Advertising has paid some of that money, but far from all. Maybe half of it, a little less probably. But I'm not complaining, I love this hobby and I'm glad to pay for it.

My point is that I have never begged you for money until now. And when I do, 0,133% of you care enough to do something about it. :plain2:

I'm quite let down by the results of this donation. :(
Thanks to those of you who obviously care though - the few of you who donated. My respect goes out to you.

I'm closing this thread as we're evidently heading nowhere. I will unstick it and remove my announcement as well.

In case you missed it already, I ordered the "own license" for $160 the other day, here's a link in case you doubt that I used the donations for the license:
