Was this before.. or after it was released on DC?

Before. You can see that it is very very similar to the DC version, in fact I believe it was finished for quite a while already and Sega just polished the gfx up and split the game in two.

lol
It's so frickin' amazing, if they would have had this game out by, say 98 I am sure the Saturn would have done loads better :(

I don't know about that.. I mean, as amazing as the real Shenmue was, it didn't save the DC, did it. :(

But anyway, I still can't get over just how amazing the graphics are on that Saturn version.. :D

I'm guessing the reason for putting the Saturn in the TV cabinet was as a tribute to this early version.. :)

all i can say is WOW! i mean WOW, the facial expressions are amazing, the backgrounds dont look as detailed but most of the game elements appear to be there, and seemingly the story has been thought of long before the game was released... i saw elements of shenmue 1 and 2 involved in that footage... sure it looked a little shabby for todays standards, but im dam certain the playstation couldnt do that stuff

also of note is that the action sequences didnt quite flow but im presuming that was a very early development version

proof once again that in the right hands the saturn owned
