April 24, 2002 - Nintendo announced today that it will launch its next-generation GameCube console at midnight on May 2 in some UK cities. The console will be available early at three different HMV locations in London, Birmingham and Glasgow. Each store will hand out free copies of the game Luigi's Mansion to its first 100 customers, according to Nintendo.
Gigantic, transparent cubes featuring several music artists will be present at the midnight launches, too, in order to attract potential buyers. Some of the musicians scheduled to play inside the displays, approximately 343 cubic feet in diameter, include So Solid Crew member Asher D, Soil, and the Allstars.

yah, but i bet HMV will sell the gamecube for more than £130...still Nintendo r really surprising me lately. they real are going full blown into this console war and seriously are begining to campaign. all my doubts about the cube succeeding are definitely gone now, or more like shifted.../me looks at xbox sales

You'll get Luigi's Mansion tho, if you're among the first 100. And if you aren't, just go home and buy the cube somewhere else :)

bah HMV, overprices b*tches... but yeah the xbox has tried SO hard to be cool here, i mean ive seen SO many tv ads id have thought by now all the 10 year olds would be screaming at mom for an xbox (although the playstation 2 they got this christmas was prolly a hole in the pocket of the parents...), ninty sure have some class marketing going on, but that stands for nothing if nobody see's it (a la sega)... i just hope they start to shove the cube in our faces, and an advert with sonic and mario shaking hands for sonic adventure 2 would be SO great

"Electronics Boutique and GAME have confirmed that the GameCube will retail for just £129 in all of their stores - which means that Brits will be paying the same as their continental cousins. "

Wow... from the sales staff I`ve spoken to today a lot of places are going with the £129.99 price! :)
Funny story. I was in Currys and there was an XBox-owning customer on the phone to the sales assistant compaining that their brand new copy of Max Payne wouldn`t even start up. Hee hee hee.

Not really, some retailers are doing different deals than others (I have seen 50% of a game)
