Lower quality when character is far away?

What I'm talking about, is that in games like Super Mario 64, and Ocarina of Time, when your character gets further away from the screen, their polygons quality reduces and they look a lot blockier.

For example, in OoT, Link's hat becomes blockier, shield becomes paper thin, ears become longer and look worse, tunic molds to his arms, and his ankles become very thin.

In SM64, usually it's just Mario's head that's noticable. His head becomes very square and such.

It's getting annoying now. I'm wondering if there's an option or a plugin that will fix this. It isn't important really, I'm just curious if it can be fixed.

Also, was it present in the actual N64 games?

It's called LOD, level of dateil and reduced the character models to lower quality, if the camera is far away.... sorry can't describe better, I'm drunk.
