"no controller in slot 1"

i just downloaded 1964, and when i tried to start No Mercy, it said, "no controller in slot 1." don't get me wrong, it made me lol, but wtf? :crazy:

On the menu bar (the one on top eith file and things like that) Goto plug-ins click input settings and for controller 1 make sure the plugged box is checked.

My box is checked but it is still asking for a controller.
