What name do you give to Zelda hero when you start a new game ? Do you simply name him "Link", same as your first name or something special ?
I personally give him my first name in order to be more immersed into the game :)

I give my screenname in every game that asks for a name.

Link.. same with any other game that asks for a name (not Link, but the character's actual name). Kinda kills the experience for me when characters are named different than intended.

Link, if it is a hero with a suggested name, it will be it, if no name is given, WhiteX it is.

When i was young and really immature, like two years ago, i use to type profanities (swear words) as my name! Ie. Will you, dickwad, take the blue gem or exit the magic woods?

If there is one hero, sometimes I will give him my first name, or his/her intended name if there is one. If there are multiple heroes and they have intended names, I use those, otherwise I usually use my name and my friends' names. In the case of OOT, which I've beaten 1,000,000 times over, sometimes for the heck of it I choose Zelda or Nabooru, just because of the conversations that take place with those characters later in the game. (They both treat their own names generically, like any other name.) If you name yourself Zelda, she says that the name is "somehow... familiar". And if you name yourself Nabooru, when you tell her your name, she asks, "What kind of a name is that?" Cheap thrills.

Well if I already have played the game a few times I pick strange names.
Such as Alathia for a female or Antropos for a male. Sometimes if I REALLY hate the character bone head. If I'm in a flipant mood such as when playing FF7 for the 9th time I named Tifa Babe and Aeris, OtherBabe. Worked for me :D
It does really make the conversation interesting when Barrest is bonehead and Yuffie is Skinny and Tifa is Babe etc. Although it does get tiresome after a while, too bad you can't rename enemies. Like Sepheroth could be SillyPutty (it won't fit but that's not the point).

I always use intended names. If there isn't one, I use my first name, Ben.

I usually select "Zelda" for him. Sometimes I call him Link. In Wind Waker, I also adopted the name "idiot." It's funny when they call you that. "Let's get going, idiot!"

Too many people try too hard to offend me too, they fail. I just end up offending them. :D
I can't really imagine why anyone would want to call Link something else, He's always going to be Link to me, makes the whole thing feel more authentic than If I called him Scott. That plus if theres any voice acting in the game the ability to rename yourself screws up their ability to talk about you.

When I was a kid I'd always name the main characters after myself.
Like, I renamed Cecil as my own name in Final Fantasy 4. It was after Final Fantasy 4 though that video game characters finally had seperate unique personalities that went along with the stories, so I started using the default names and seeing through their eyes instead of my own.

Link, in every zelda. I try to make the names (if I need to input one) to match the game/character/plot as well as I can. I think I have obsessive-compulsive -syndrome. >_>

The thing is, Nintendo doesn't suggest using "Link" as the name of the hero, as opposed to Final Fantasy for example.
According to Wikipedia in http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Link_%28The_Legend_of_Zelda_series%29 :
Link is named for the “link” the player shares with the hero of each game, and in every game (except Four Swords Adventures), the player can name the character according to his or her wishes.
