OK I got Project64 to work. However, when I go to configure controller and click a button to set the key on the gamepad, the stupid thing automatically changes to JoyUp or something then it says the other keys already have that usage. how do I fix this?

Does your gamepad have a throttle? If it has, make sure that the throttle is centered.

Do you mean the Precision keys? Otherwise I'm not sure what this throttle is.
I have a Gravis Eliminator Aftershock

It might be a hyper-sensitive analog stick. Temporarily setting the deadzone to max should allow you to configure the buttons.

I'm sure you're right, but am a novice at these terms. What is the deadzone?

its a set amount of the axis where the driver nulls the sticks movement so it isn't picked up by pj64.
its within the plugin properties.

The deadzone! Max it, configure your buttons, then turn it back down.
