Does anyone have experience with this? I am referring not to the power supply, but the connector inside the notebook itself. Does each notebook require a special connector? I imagine it would have to be soldered in. I have very little experience with soldering. Is it difficult to do?

It depends. Different notebooks - different connectors (of course it's always possible to replace proprietary connector with common one but you must know what you doing :) ), for experienced man it's a piece of cake, but if you have very little experience with soldering then just don't do it - there's a lot of small surface-mounted components inside which can be easily damaged by wrong move. And usually most difficult part is to open notebook. So find anyone who really knows how to hold soldering iron and screwdriver and let him do it for you. It will cost a bottle of beer (maybe two or four :) ) + price of connector.
