Remember Yamauchi's fund to support development? Square's getting some of that money to make Final Fantasy games for GameCube and GBA. No, this is not a joke.

It's like my worst nightmare come true...

"Fantasy Becomes Reality
It's official. Nintendo confirms that Square's Final Fantasy series will return to GameCube.
March 08, 2002 - The long-awaited news has finally struck. According to Nintendo of America and the morning edition of the Nihon Kezai Shimbun, Square's acclaimed Final Fantasy series will return to Nintendo. Via a new agreement, GameCube and Game Boy Advance will see Final Fantasy branded software. The aforementioned agreement comes the way of Nintendo's recently announced Q Fund where start-up developers can borrow money from the Big N to finance software.
The interesting twist in this story is that the Final Fantasy branded software will return via a new Square affiliate. The unnamed development house -- poised to be titled by the end of the month -- will use cash from the Q Fund to produce the FF software. In light of the fact that it is a Square affiliate producing software, it is unclear whether the new start-up will be porting games in the main line of the Final Fantasy series such as Final Fantasy X, XI, etc or if GameCube and Game Boy Advance will see entirely new FF-branded content.
Nintendo of America confirmed the news to IGNcube this morning, but offered no further details. Square US said it could neither confirm nor deny the news, but indicated it would have an official comment soon. "
And yet, strangely I have hope that FF may return to its once great roots? Why do I have hope? Well... I simply doubt Square can fit that much FMV onto a NGC disk, meaning they *may* have to concentrate on how to tell a story again... ;)

I've just been reading about on this and I snagged the same news here (http://www.rpgamer.com/news/Q1-2002/030802a.html)
which is:
produce software allowing users of two Nintendo consoles -- the GameCube and Game Boy Advance -- to play together
whether you like the FF series or not, you know that's going to sell hardware, hell FF sold the Wonderswan, which, lets be honest, is shit.
it's a good thing, but lets see how this plays out, it could be another Mystic Quest

This is great news! :D
HOWEVER....(it just has to be a however...right?)....it's not square itself that are gonna make the games. It's an affiliate company. And the game that is being worked on now is not a port, but a new game called Final Fantasy Unlimited which is based on an anime serie in japan....they may (hopefully) port the old snes classics to the gba tho :)

I've never been a fan of the Final Fantasy series but It'd be awesome to see a remake like Resident Evil of FF7. That would just kick ass. Since FF3 and 7 are the only ones I've played that are worth a damn and FF3 is too old of a game to faithfully. FF7 would be the best choice for a Reident Evil type remake if that was planned at all. (looking forward to playing FF tactics on the psx one day though or on the GBA ;)).Who knows maybe we cube owners might even get a new Chrono game! All I know is that this should be interesting seeing as sony is a large share holder of squaresoft.

Kakarot, you've mentioned basically all that I really want, a new Chrono game, the previous two ported to GBA, and GC respectively and FF7 remade (hopefully with an epilogue disc like that which came with FFX International)

My Cube seens to have gotten a freezing problem. I think I did something to it while taking it to a friends. It playes for a bit then locks up. I thing something is overheating... But I'll have it fixed before any of the really cool games come out.

the "square's affiliate company" is going to be headed by the exec producer of the mana sieries, my guess would be that the games would be published through squaresoft, but squares teams that make final fantasy wont have much involvement, but i wouldint be suprised if legend of mana games pop up on the cube, but i wouldint count on any ports, except possibly ff xi, wich is supposed to be online and possible multi-consle.

hehe you do know that almost everyone who worked on the mana games left to form Brownie Brown a Nintendo 1st or 2nd party
part of the reasoning behind Square doing this is so that they stop loosing employees to Nintendo.
also the Guy heading up this Second Party apparently did FF: Unlimited and the Film.
