GP2X - handheld emulation!

I'm here just to call your attention to this linux based handheld which I'm sure you'll all enjoy ( This is an emulation forum, right? :pacman:).

It runs linux out-of-the-box and is 100% supported by developers with free-software support in mind. It has all the tools needed for anyone to simply code for it or port their work from other platform.
What confirms me is the huge number of software already ported / WIP available: http://wiki.gp2x.org/ (http://wiki.gp2x.org/wiki/Main_Page)

It has a dual-processor spec, a big qvga(320x240) resolution(for proper emulation) backlit screen, action buttons tuned for gaming, 64mb ram memory and other 64mb for user usage, it uses SD flash memory card (there are cheap 1GB and 2GB SD cards available anywhere). It plays any music you throw in, any video clip and has always new firmwares that add more and more applications for it.

It features a lot of homebrew games, emulators (ie: nes, snes, genesis, neogeo and psx) and ports (ie: doom, hexen and duke3D - yeah baby! :nuke:). All these software are often banned by hardware makers (such as nintendo and sony), but those free software and linux usage is encouraged by GPH (gamepark holdings, the gp2x creators) itself! :linux:

I hope you enjoy urs as much as anyone else is. be sure to try out the genesis emulator (DrMDx), its already kickass even in earlier versions! :P pretty sweet

glad to see people know it. I came here through the n64 emulators and I could see some talented coders hang in here, so I just thought it would be a nice idea to show the gp2x off :shifty:

im not keen at the minute, ive heard about many of them getting bricked, only support sd cards up to 1gb and has fauly buttons.
i'll jut keep wiv my psp for homebrew, especially as there is goin to be some huge progress with the pspsone emulator for it.
i know there's one for gp2x but i'd rather have one on psp :)

I haven't heard of any bricked one, but you certainly can easily brick one if you try to flash a new firmware with an almost-empty battery.
As for faulty buttons, none that ive heard of. I know many of the first joysticks had a little deadzone and thats horrible, but everything now is much better
oh, and the newest firmware now supports all kinds of cards including the 2GB ones, its already been solved :) (as have many minor problems around the video playback and such)

yeah, I think what makes the gp2x worth it are the people working on it. many of the zodiac, palm/pocketpc, linux, and even psp developers are getting one gp2x.
it's specially easy for them to use it and it is actually promoted as a developing machine (unlike the psp with the many updates locking it down)

I've never heard of it til now, to be honest.

I have a PSP though, so I dont think i'd ever go for something else so similar, but the PSP is alright. But the mp3 capability is pretty useless, because the earphones that come with it are those rubbishy saftey ones that you cant hear whilst on the move.

Or are there better ones out there?

I read about this thing in Edge Magazine. It is an interesting concept. And whilst it looks fucking awful, it appears to be fairly powerful for the modestly cheap price tag.

It costs $189.99 in the US. I suggest people who want to buy the gp2x, is mainly for homebrew and emulation purposes. If you want commercial games your better off with Sony's PSP.

I for one, want to use the GP2x for emulation, movies, and such...I don't really care that much about the PSP's games.

To me it looks undefined. It doesn't look sleek, more like a tacky market toy. Enter the Pop Station (of similar build quality).

Very interesting. There are various linux builds for popular emulators. I am interested in PocketPC emulation, but the scene is a bit at a standstill (though PSX emulation is very impressive at the moment).

If I recall, the system hasn't even been released yet officially. So the scene is way ahead of itself...there are so many emulators already out for the GP2x.
