did this ever go anywhere/ was the source ever released to this? It's been a while since i looked into all this jazz and can't remember at all who was working on it or whatnot.

Are you talking about the software graphic plugin ? Because of lack of time i've not worked on it since i got mario working (some users have reported that some other games are working...), but the source code is available on source forge's cvs.
