LOL!
First off, to configure the controller, it's really easy. But it depends on what input plugin u use. The most popular is NRage's. So I'll post how to do it in there since I, too, use it.
Select the configure input (it's on a menu; it's not so hard to find! Try to find it yourself!). Then go to the devices tab under controller 1. Select your gamepad in the list there. Go back to the configure-tab. Press a button where you want to configure a key. Press the key on your gamepad, and it's set! It's that easy!
And about the games...
First off, remember that you can't ask for games here! Second, what games are good? You will just have to find which games you like. Then you can obtain them. I won't tell you where, though.
And a faq? Read the readme-file and check out these forums so you know what's happening!

If you have an MS Sidewinder the trick is to turn on the motion sensor (green light on joystick not red) when defining the keys. If you are still having problems then please let me know and I can send you some predefined config files.
As for the FAQ's read the sticky's at the top of the forum's, Smiff's site is a good place for the various emulator versions and tools that are useful (www.smiff.clara.net) oh and the best place in the whole world to see which game to run in which emulator is my site!
lol

Seriosuly we are a pretty helpful bunch, just don't ask where to download games or when a new version of an emulator is due out. Also for help on a particluar game use the search feature in this forum so that you don't ask a question that has been answered 10 times before

No problem.
I wasnt asking for games and i never will.......
That's good. Good, good.
but am i too assume that all games work great?
Most games does.
i have one and it doesnt seem to function properly it works but its not 100% that i can tell....is this normal??
It's simple. If you have pj 1.4, there's a gui. If the gui, there are details about the game. It can say, like if it's compitable or not. And whether there's some errors in the game. So you can check there.
If it says that there are some issues, then it's normal.
it seems slow what the best way to speed things up????
I assume that this is because you don't have a computer that is fast enough. 800 MHz Pentium III should be efficient to play all games at a decent speed. Except some few, like Perfect Dark.

hey thanks for the info!!!!!!! i just need a little clarification:
"It's simple. If you have pj 1.4, there's a gui. If the gui, there are details about the game. It can say, like if it's compitable or not. And whether there's some errors in the game. So you can check there. If it says that there are some issues, then it's normal."
whats pj 1.4 and whats gui???
"most games do work"
so when i try to play something and i get garbled distortion or i cant see all the graphics on some of the characters in the game is that errors on the game or is that my system??? most games work perfectly?????
whats the best emulator are they similar or should i just stiuck with 1964 only??

OK...
whats pj 1.4 and whats gui
First off, Pj stands for "Project64", the emulator which this forum is dedicated to. GUI means "Graphical user interface" and is what you see when you run a program. In Pj, there is a list with some headers like compitable, comments, etc -- that's the GUI.
so when i try to play something and i get garbled distortion or i cant see all the graphics on some of the characters in the game is that errors on the game or is that my system??? most games work perfectly?????
First of all, you must know if the game is compitable with the emulator. It's said in the GUI. In pj, it's said "compitable" if it is, or "not compitable" if it can't be played on the emulator.
In 1964, this is also shown in a list. But rather, it says "Playable" if it can be played, or "Not playable" if it can't.
And as I said, most games work. But some don't.
whats the best emulator are they similar or should i just stiuck with 1964 only??
Well, for your system, 1964 might be the best, since Pj won't run full speed. I suggest you use 1964, or pj if you like, but note that you probably won't get full speed in games.
here are my specs:
p3
500
768 mb rams
ati aiw 32mb agp
Okay, you have a Pentium III 500 MHz, that's not just quite enough for pj. Go for 1964.
768 mb ram? That's a little much, but it doesn't matter.
ATI-cards are not good. Especially with Pj, since they will cause many graphic-problems with games. I dunno about 1964, though, but I guess it's the same. If you want yourself a good card to a good price, then go for GeForce 2.
Epic64
February 21st, 2002, 20:52
Hmm firstly Doom this is the 1964 forum not PJ64! (Unless it's been moved of course!) 768 Ram! If you have that much then I suggest you get sell some of it to get a Geforce 2 video card. The ATI card will give you all kinds of problems! But really your whole machine is hovering on the minimum spec. borderline to play most emus. If you wanna try just a few games try using Corn it's one of the fastest.
Doomulation
February 21st, 2002, 22:56
Oh I forgot which forum it was I posted in!
Um, yes, Corn is probably the fastest one. Though, 1964 is probably the fastest one with much compability. I think it's even more than Pj.

thanks for all the useful info!!! bottomline its time to take the plunge and get a new system!!!!!!! :)
one last question (for now anyway, and thanks again for the help so far)
i found trwin and for some reason it works great for me WHY??? it runs some games at full speed great sound etc.......... is this one still being worked on? also if i were to get an awesome to spec system what would be the best emu to use
THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

my system isnt top of the line either. i have a p3 450 and perfect dark runs at full speed(and too fast in most cases) look at my signature for my system specs. lemme put it this way... i still havent found a good reason to upgrade my computer. i can run any game on the market that i have found(yes i own them all legaly) at medium-full detail. im not overclocked or anything so before you upgrade consider these things.
btw... i have yet to find a n64 game that runs to slow.
omt... some of the other games include aquanox, return to castle wolfenstien, and ghost recon.
oh... i am running the newest version 0.7.3

so what am i doing wrong??? if some games are running WAy SLOW or not working to good at all with most of the emulators??? trwin doesnt play ALL but i have found that it works best on my system so far.....why is this???? i want the best best possible n64 expericence for my specs....what would that be????
thanks!!!!!!!!!!

dude, use 1964, get jabo's d3d plugin 1.4 from the pj64 plugin directory, use azimer's .4 audio plugin from the 1964 .73 patch, and then get an ini from the ini topic in this forum. that'll get you going.
1964 is a pain to configure (atm) but it is worth it. it has the highest compat, is fast (probably for your machine, but you really SHOULD get a geforce 2 ~$50 on pricewatch.com), and is a nice interface. Also, the best joystick will help the experience, and getting an n64 controller on an adaptoid (~$15 liksang.com) is the best road for that... as for finding games, you can't ask here, but it's like finding mp3s, not all that hard.
pm me if u need more help.

righty ho chap...lemme sort this out.
i cant help getting the feeling that u havent got jabos gfx plugins.
just in case u havent....download pj641.4 ...(try www.pj64.com), its a great emu, but u can get almost, if sometimes better, compatbility on 1964. now go into the pj64 plugin directory and copy and paste the Jabos Direct3d6 and Direct3d7.dll's into the 1964 plugin directory. now just as u selected ur input plugin, select the gfx plugin (preferabbly choose the Direct3d6 plugin, as ur card might be quite old). now ull find loadz loadz loadz more games compatible, as the gfx plugin bundled with 1964 is still work-in-progress.
!) most games should work, not a huge amount work PERFECT, but the majority work. check out my compat. list on the 1964 forum, sorry for not having loadz and loadz of games, but it should cover the majority of games. just in case ur lazy and cant be bothered to check my list, ill suggest some of my fav.....
Zelda: Majoras Mask
Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Tony Hawks 1
Tony Hawks 2
Mario64
Conkers' Bad Fur Day
Iss98/2000
Fighter's Destiny
Diddy Kong Racing (highly reccommend)
Shadow man
2) u said ur gfx card is an ATI All in Wonder (AIW), well ATI brand all their cards in various catagories, if im right 'all in wonder' means its the card with all the outputs like tv-out, etc. uve gotta find out if its an ATI Rage, or ATI Radeon, etc....as this makes it easier for us to work out how to help ur gfx probs.
if its an ATI Radeon (could well be considering its 32megs) then ur in luck as it works very well with the gfx plugin. if its not u might experience gfx glitches...not much u can do really.
3)now onto speed. u said ur games r running slow...no prob, 1964 actually is customisable to be almost as fast as corn (which was like a super fast n64 emu). basically in the rom-browser (make sure u select the directory where u roms are located to allow the rom browser to work) right-click on the rom ur about to play. this brings up the game settings for that particular game. wat u wanna change at the moment is the COUNTER FACTOR. its difficult for me to tell u wat number in the COUNTER FACTOR option u should change to, but basically i would try CF 3/4......now the best way to test wether u need to up or lower the CF is this...
a) if the game is suffering from slow framrate (look at the vi/s in the bottom of the screen when playing the game) then u need to up the CF
b) if the game is running at a fast framerate, but is playing very choppy, u need to lower the CF
REMEMBER: make sure ur game has a Max Vi Limit (this game be set in the game settings by right-clicking on the rom in the rom-browser)
All this may sound confusing, but its really simply to do, and u end up getting huge speed boosts not seen on other emus.
oh and u wanted an faq:
http://1964emu.emulation64.com/help.htm
and also ppl, the bloke didnt request any roms...he just wanted to know wat games were good or not...theres no ban on that.

first off i have an ALL IN WONDER "Radeon" 32mb agp card
i followed your advice and downloaded 1964 and pj64 and got the plugins etc... things seem to be running a bit better although i seem to have some gfx issues not many but a few and i definately am having some sound issues? i am using azimers .3 and its working better then .4 but choppy and crackly what can i do about that?
also what is vi/s stand for?
I ALSO FOLLOWED THESE FROM THE STICKY
- If 1964's Windows menu crashes when you try to access it while a game is running, go to the Edit Menu and choose "Preferences". Then uncheck "Status Bar CPU Usage Stats" (turn it off). This solves the menu crashing problem. It is our profiler, and it has an embarassing divide-by-zero bug in it.
(I DID WHAT THE ABOVE AND BELOW SAYS BUT IT DIDNT HELP, WHY? )
- "Crackly" sound. If you get this in some games, you can try to turn off "DMA in Segments" under Rom Options. (WHEN I DID THIS THE PARTICULAR ITEM WOULDNT EVEN RUN)
THANKS A MILLION!

ah u hav a radeon, good stuff. to get the best results u need to download the latest ATI drivers for the radeon, im guessing they cn be found at www.ati.com, or definitely at www.3dchipset.com. if u r still using the drivers that came with ur pc for ur gfx card, then u should notice a difference in general on ur pc, most probably in terms of speed for games. also ATI apparently fixed something that by coincidence allowed jabos gfx plugin to work better, so thats another reason to update.
now wat sound card r u using, sound cards generally are not as big a prob as gfx cards can be in configuring emus, so i doubt thats the reason.
often crackly sound comes from a slow computer...uve got similar specs to me, and the sound is ok..ish. first off let me explain a bit about the azi's sound plugins:
azimar's 0.30 (old driver): an oldish version of his audio plugins, which is most compatible with games and is the faster plugin, but not got certain special additions, like mp3 audio, which is used in perfect dark and conker's bad fur day. so the effect can be at times a bit crackly.
azimar's 0.4beta: its a beta, so its still a work-in-progress plugin (apparently azi's latest unofficial build is something like 25% faster, which should be cool when released). this plugin has mp3 audio and probably some other stuff as the sound quality is MUCH clearer, cleaner, etc. but its slower and less compatible (some games wont run with it...)
in my compat. list i briefly tested which audio plugin works best for the games i had, generally i found that azimar's 0.4beta gave the best results, as long as u could get the rom to run fast enuff.
so u asked wat are vi/s? i cant remember wat they stand for but its something to do with how many lines are are displayed, similar to htz i guess, so a USA n64 cartridge would be limited to 60 vi/s on US n64s as thats the limit for NTSC TVS, wheres in Europe, Pal tvs are limited to 50htz, and so PAL n64 games are limited to 50vi/s (put simply). i would recommend limiting all roms to 60vi/s, if there isnt a limit, the game will run too fast and out of sync, but thats really up to you.
another option to improve speed, which is sorta only really a beta option, is the 32-bit core. only some games can take advantage of this, check my list to see which ones can. this option again can be selected in the individual game settings.

whoa, stop comparing the two emus. hav u even tried pj64 yet?
pj64 is pretty much the most complete emu out there. it should be easy to use.
i really dunno wats up with ur config, as most of the ppl on this forum hav had no probs using 1964. the emu plays way way more than trwin (although trwin was a quality emu), its core is pretty damn amazing (considering it has similar compatibility to pj64, which is an achievement in itself)...very few emus can play perfect dark, diddky kong racing and jet force gemeni and they are all the ones based on the pj64 plugin system (zilmar spec), such as 1964, pj64, apollo, tr64, daedalus. try one of those as well, maybe u just hav something not configured well in 1964.
u could try uninstalling everything, but clicking on the uninstall registry located in the 'uninstal' folder. this'll reset all settings to default so u can try again.
tony hawk control lay out.
this is how it works:
C LEFT=kick flip + direction button on joystick
C DOWN=ollie/jump (u need to press this first before doing a move)
C RIGHT=grap + direction button on joystick
C-UP= grind + direction button on joystick

C LEFT=kick flip + direction button on joystick
C DOWN=ollie/jump (u need to press this first before doing a move)
C RIGHT=grap + direction button on joystick
C-UP= grind + direction button on joystick
i think i am getting somewhere but.....what are c buttons? my game pad has a control pad on the left (directionals) 4 buttons on the right x y and a b
and then two button on top one on the left and one on the right
what are the C ones?

if so do this for tony hawks:
on ur sindwinder u want to configure it so that
button A = Yellow Down on ur n64 input plugin
button B = Yellow Right on ur n64 input plugin
button X= Yellow Left on......
button Y = Yellow UP......
now do ur shoulder buttons as A and B in the n64 input plugin.
(possibly do start as ENTER.
ive got like10 buttons on my sidewinder...A,B,C,X,Y,Z,L,R,START,SHIFT + d-pad

its becos ur controller DOESNT HAV ENUFF BUTTONS...get another controller or something for like $20 with more. and goddman go to a nintendo site and hav a look at the layout of the n64 controller.
thats why u hav to keep changing ur buttons.
a plugin is just a part of an emulator that can be compatible with a variety of emulators. for instance, an author decides to make his gfx code thingy bob into a plugin so other emu authors can make use of it. if u eva use a psx emu, in which the plugin is used much more extensively

why is knowing the layout of a nintendo controller going to help me if i dont have enough buttons? do u mean if i look at the layout of the contoller then i can set the Microsoft peice of Sh_T in a better way? can u reccomend a good controller that will work well for me?? can i get a nintendo controller to work?
last question: why would Thawk2 not run in 1964 1.4 it wount get past a screen talking about a missing contoller pack 4 but it does run in Pj64 but a little slow?
