i would generally get an athlon but i don't actually know which is faster for pj64.. anyone done any tests? probably either are more than fast enough for anything pj64 will need..

It pretty much depends on what you like. Some like intel, some like amd. Amd's processors are cheaper, though. You can check out benchmarks to decide which is right for you.

Both an AMD64 3200+ and a P4 3.2ghz would provide excellent performance in n64 emulation, although I believe the AMD64 is the better choice (I recently had a change of heart on that). AMD64 3200+ has a slight edge in a lot of tasks except video encoding/decoding. Personally I have no regrets for my choice though :D
FPS with Perfect Dark with my system: btw, FPS in Project64 is equal to VIs in 1964 so don't take any notice of it, its not actually FPS, the framerate is equal to half. so mine would be about 63 with this screenshot, thats still twice as fast as what you get (20 fps).

CPU is the most important thing to get an decent speed in emulation

yes, but a good video card will help vastly if you want a smooth framerate.
