no audio for player 1 in multiplayer Mario Kart 64

The audio works fine in one player mode, but when there are two players, only player two has sound. I've read the game faq and user manual and have found no solution. Any help would be great.

Windows XP Mobile Intel Pentium III CPU - M 1133MHz 725MHz,248 MB of RAM
Intel 82830M Graphics Controller-O
Intel 82801CA/CAM AC'97 Audio Controller
(I just copied from system information, I unfortunately don't know anything about my hardware.)

This just in: Left and right steering does not work on my gamepad or on the keyboard. I've never had this problem before.

that's the way it is in the original mario kart. I remember because we always argued over who would be player 2

Well the audio on Player 1 works fine on a different computer, so I'm pretty sure that it's the fault of my computer.
