...Imageshack (http://www.imageshack.ws) will convert a BMP to PNG for me in less than 10 seconds (Varying with size), considerably reducing its size but keeping the same picture quality...
...I love you, Imageshack. You make all my BMP's seem less evil and HUGE...

why use bitmaps in the first place?

You can't always control what you get off the web.

I use Paint because...Well, I hate my CorelDraw for being so slow, Photoshop I don't even bother with (Same with Fireworks), and it's just easier for taking pictures off the web. Press the "Print Screen" button to snapshot, blah blah blah, you have a perfect quality image ready to convert using Imageshack.
Plus I do all my image editing in Paint. It kinda makes my work more appreciative when I do things like make glowing text by hand.

To take images off the web, you can simply rightclick the image and choose "save image as..." in your browser. To take images of the web, the "print screen" thing is ok, but there are tools out there that start even faster than paint and let you paste images and save them in any format you like ;)

Of course, but Paint is very user friendly for lazy people like me. I dunno...It's just one of those things. I prefer Paint, so...Meh...I do like Fireworks, since it actually does what I want it to do, but Paint is just my thing. I like working pixel by pixel in paint.

You can save as PNGs in Paint if you want, and PNGs are lossless so there is no difference in quality between them and bitmaps and are a fraction of the size. It would therefore take you much less time to upload them.
Am I missing the point here, or can you not save as a number of different image files from Paint?

I have windows 98, which won't save PNG's with my version of Paint. It won't even open them.

I guess it's time to take the voyage into the 21st century and update to XP. Or download Infranview.

I hate Irfanview personally.
Why?
Personally I think it does what it does well.

Irfanview is just a picture viewer that can convert pictures from one format to another, what's to hate?

It's small, fast, free, and works well? Damn those Austrian programmers! :P

I still prefer Imageshack. But At least Ifranview will load my JPEG's and GIF's faster now. Thanks guys :)

It has a poor layout, it is pointless since I personally have to have Photoshop on my computer anyway for what I do, and its loaded with feature that don't work so well.

Poor layout? Looks great to me
And pointless because you have Photoshop.... I don't think they're aiming for the same market somehow.
What features don't work so well?
Just seems like you don't like it because it isn't Photoshop (nor does it pretend to be), it doesn't have a Photoshop style interface (which again it doesn't need) and the features that don't work so well, please name them :)

Well everyone is entitled to their own opinion I guess, Irfanview is just a picture viewer though.

i find IrfanView to be excellent for Win98, which doesn't come with the Windows Picture Viewer that XP has. Opens pictures instantly which is what I'm looking for. I use Photoshop to do all my image-editing but for viewing, IrfanView is very nice.

My PictureViewer always seems to disappear. Seriously, I'll have it after reformatting, then a week later BAM, "Windows cannot locate PictureViewer.exe" when I try to open a JPEG or GIF.
I think it's because of CorelDraw...But I'm not sure...

for simple picture resizing or browsing collections there is no point in using photoshop or another large scale program really. on windows i used acdsee, on linux there is gwenview (then again thats pretty much of a clone of acdsee) which is a lot speedier for that matter.

are you sure thats not just the file association pointing to the wrong app? see if you can locate the program on your hard drive at all.
