What the heck?! Looks like the ZSNES forum was hacked!

Looks like it. :(

It sure was. The popular theory is that before one of the Admins was demoted, someone using his account (may have been him or not) made additional Administrator accounts in secret. Then on 28th of June one of these accounts was used to mass spam every user, ban all the other admins and ultimately the board was deleted. An older back-up was reinstated perhaps by the secret admin that no one knows the identity of. This was also deleted later. The board is now collapsed...

Just goes to show you that this could happen to pretty much any forum - it's scary. Luckily our Admins are 100% trustworthy ;)

Wow, what can they do now, create a new forum?

Ultimately, that's probably going to be the only good solution. Just remove the forum and start afresh. The previous ZSNESBoards were also hacked and had to be replaced.

Never a good idea with too many admins. That's why we only have 4 (I'm the only one being real active posting), and I trust them all to 100%.

That's a scary thing that can happen to any board, but it's unlikely to ever happen here.

Yeah, I didn't realize somebody posted here about the forum hack. I actually logged in before the boards were ultimately deleted.

I forget what the Hacker's Name was that said hacked it. I just remember it saying You've been hacked by so and so. We have hacked all these forum board softwares and like 2+ times for certain ones.

Such immaturity.

I pulled a stunt like that on one of my friends, once, when he wouldn't believe me that he had no root password for MySQL.

SELECT * FROM `phpbb_users` WHERE `user_level` = 1;

Always good to do that occasionally when you have multiple admins.

a forum should only ever have ONE admin and then the chain of command should follow where super moderators do most of the work of administering the moderator as staff or at least thats how i do it

i learned the hard way that no matter how trust worthy someone maybe at a particular moment in time
you don't know what time may bring forth , ie you could have some kind of fall out

For very large forums that's the only way to run it yeah, as the admin can't possibly control everything. But fortunately this forum isn't so big that such a system is neccesary. And, believe me, all of the admins and mods on this board are good people and trustworthy so I REALLY doubt we'll see such a thing happen here (famous last words? )

i'm sad, there are really bad news :(
with the backup, is it possible to create again a new forum, but with all the old posts available?

Looks like Ipher move his site from ipher.emuhost.com (http://ipher.emuhost.com) which now shows a RIP slogan. :bye3:

It's now at http://www.ipherswipsite.com/ instead. So everybody move your links here.

SO...

Does anybody out there know when or if ZSNES will open up their forums again?
I'm kinda missing it ya know. Also I thought that they were gonna release the ZSNES 1.4 somtime this month.

Any word would do a world of good. Thanks everyone.

You could probably find the ZSNES developers/forum administrators on IRC. Also check out CVS for updates on the ZSNES source code at http://sourceforge.net/projects/zsnes

They can have their official board hosted here if they want, but maybe they're just fed up with message boards by now. ;)

You could always email them the message, Martin. I'm sure they'd be glad to hear your opinions on how they could avoid getting hacked... like... having... their... board... hosted... say... here... heh heh. And of course, the "less is more" thing with the admins. People like Clements and you are here pretty frenquently, and with you guys in cahoots with a couple of theirs would be more than enough sherifs to keep the coral in check. Damn, been in Wyoming too freaking long... OCTOBER, WHERE ARE YOU, I WANNA GO HOME! ;)
