Yeah, you can play online. Download version 1.3k of Project 64, or use 1964.

1964 0.9.9 it´s the best option to play on internet
PJ64 1.5 (not PJ64K) doesn´t support play online

The truth is that PJ64k is better than 1964 for netplay (more stable, less bugs, faster). but 1964 has higher compatibility and less CPU requirements.

could anyone give me an estimate of what kind of bandwidth would this require?

That does vary from game to game. Monopoly requires less bandwith than Super Smash Brothers, but most games should run fine with a 1024/256 connection.
