Hurr hurr.
Mind, I'm on uber-corporate pigdog service BT 1.1Mbit here, so... *cough*.
A little less amateur, though.

Well Xade, they ain't forcing you. I know there are other ISPs in the merry land of England (none of them any good mind you :P)

How many do you know that offer solid reliable 1.1Mbit on ADSL though? I mean I get 120K download speeds all the time...
That said, I'm paying stacksssss for mine (£37 - $70 per month).

A few I'm sure, perhaps browse net4nowt sometime. Anyways why whinge about it if you're getting a good speed? I'm just saying, put up or move elsewhere.
The broadband situation in the UK though is total shit I'd have to say that (having experienced it for a while). Sweden is like a different world in comparison (cheap and fast - the former is saying something as nearly everything else is expensive).

For my sort of connection what are we talking price-wise over there?

Just tried the first ISP and got it to around £30 for a 2MB connection (about £23 for 1meg), though you can get vastly higher than that for not much more, as well as lower for less of course.
I'm sure shopping around would get much better deals than that though.

Christ! I'm moving to Sweden!
Then again, that saving is gonna be displaced majorly by the fact that, like, everything else over there is a rip, right?

Yeah the taxes are a bit on the high side. Though I don't drink to excess, nor do I smoke, so I don't notice it as much as others might.
Check here: http://www.bostream.com/controller.php?action=private
(The site's in Swedish, but it's pretty easy to understand). 26Mbps for around £30 a month :) Only in certain areas though. I believe the setup charge is also reasonably substantial (but affordable).

Here I am with 1.1Mbps thinking I'm a bigshot.
26?!?!?!

I recently got 3 Mbps , 1,1 mbps has got normal in germany . They got no 700 kbps lines anymore , 1,1 mbps is minimum ^_^
But 26 Mbps ? That's ridiculous !

Sweden is lovely when it comes to broadband. :)
I used to have 10Mbit half duplex (dedicated) and paid around £15 a month for it and I've been on a shared 100Mbit connection which was completely free. :)
But now I'm on 2Mbit and pay about £30. In September I'll be back on 10Mbit though and it's free as well.

zAlbee:
You have a 5 mb connection and only download at 600 kb? My connection is 4 mb and I have seen 700 kb and higher although average is like 400 on most sites, except windows update where I downloaded like 15 mb in less than a minute. I pay $20 a month (canadian) and its DSL.

Hah, I can't help but feel poor in amongst this crowd! Maybe it's time for that 1,000 Mbps fibre-optic to my ISP... heh...
That's an interesting (lame?) poll actually... what sort of connections are people on at emutalk?!
I'm almost certainly gonna be a mid-carder by the looks of things.

I think it about time that the English stop whingeing. They whinge about the cricket and haven't got over the fact that they have actually won a world championship for once. They'll get over it eventually, but they shouldn't cause it will be their last for a while. :P
I live in Australia and I am on ADSl and I get a download speed of 20Kb\s so I don't know what you are whingeing about. I'm not whingeing yet because I've only just got off Dial-Up so I am happy. :)
Oh by the way. I hope you enjoyed your success in the West Indies cause it will be your last for a long time.
Ahhhh, I feel much better now. :teehee: Thanks :naughty:

I only get download speeds of 5kb/s and it sucks. I'm just waiting for an isp to bring dsl down where I live which should be withing the next 2 months or so.

hmm, maybe you have an uncapped connection, because,
5 Mbps / 8 = 0.625 MB/s
and my max rate is about 606 K/s. it's also possible your ISP is caching certain sites to make them go faster. wait wtf, $20 CAD?? we pay $45 for cable (cogeco). it's split between my roomies though, so i end up paying $15.
Martin: wow, that's awesome... university connection?
Xade: i have a feeling you're seeing an unfair representation here, as people with fast connections enjoy talking about them more :)

I damned hope so; I'm beginning to feel kinda inadequate here!
But yeah, I mean 512Kb is standard issue around my neck of the woods; it's pretty rare that people have a 1Mbps connection. I think that the max available to us is 2Mbps, but that's £45+ ($75) !!!
We might have 4 tops, but then you can only dream of the prices :(
ANYWAY half of you guys are at college, and that just doesn't count! I could stroll into my dad's office and start downloading at 1 megaBYTE a second!!
