Ummm... 'eh? It's obvious that Intel is probably working on one, but nothing has yet been released... ummm... what's the point of this if nobody has any sort of idea what the p5 will be like?

According to MaximumPC, the new Prescott core brings enough changes that they may as well call it a Pentium 5. Take that any way you want, the fact remains that changing the 4 to a 5 is not likely to be the magical experience minkster is hoping for.
Or maybe it will be. Frankly I don't care.

Really it shouldn't make too much of a change, but like Allnatural I could care less since I don't like pentium processors.

Agreed, rumor has it AMD is winning the race these days, on more than just the price point. Now let's talk about the next hammer to come out. :D

i agree with khanmeister :)
but the prescott is looking promising, it's a shame intel are going to start using AMD-64 technology, so Intel will probably be the most popular as always in the 64 bit world

My athlon XP 2000 kicks "ass" with 1964 and Project64 already :D

same here, both emu's run perfectly at a high framerate with my amd 2500+
on the resoultion 1280 x 1024, what more could i ask for?

They both run kick ass on my Celeron Tualatin 1200@1755MHz. ;)

well if its a barton, you can increase the fsb to 400mhz (200x2) which will turn it into a 3200+ with bearly any heat increase :)

My athlon xp 3200 would kick ass, but my motherboard sucks. It'seems the place I ordered my pc from sent me a motherboard that only supports up to an athlon 3000, so I'm stuck running my processor slower right now. I would send it back, but I don't like to wait so I'm gonna just gonna buy another motherboard soon. Just watch out when ordering a pc from ibuypower.

For pentuim lovers, and worshippers like myself, pentuim 5 processors would be an intersting commodity. I may not have been invented yet, I am actually surprised it hasnt, due to the fact that usually something seems to come out not too long after I buy a new computer.

speaking of Intel, news just let out that they are going to use a PR ratings system like AMD have been for 2 years

If you wanna move on to NGC emus in the future, that extra horsepower 'll come in handy. At the very least, it's nice to know its there :chinese: :daedalus:

gosh, last (and only) intel processor i ever used was the Pentium-MMX 200 MHz, ever since my Athlon 900 i've been wasting my time teaching idiots that ask you, hey man what pentiun you got, wake up idiot, there is better and cheaper processors out there, and one more thing that i could not hate any more about uneducated PC users, when a game simply refuses to work or runs like shit, i ask them what graphics card they have, they say .............huh, then they'll blurt out random numbers like 6.7 Ghz and 38472MB of ram and 64563GB Hard Drive, none of thats gonna help you run halo on integrated graphics buddy

Yeah, that's typical, I know it. Athlons is - and will always be - the best processor in the market you can get for money (well, at least it seems so now). Always since I learned of AMD have I used them, and always will I until they go bankrupt (which they probably won't). I say, screw intel's stupid pentium processors and hail AMD! :D
Okay, I got a little carried away, but so what?! :P This is IMO, remember that!

maybe i shulda rephrased the title of the topic to future processors in stead of pentium 5 :P

They both run kick ass on my Celeron Tualatin 1200@1755MHz. ;)
Tualatin 1700~AthlonXP 1600 > P4 1900
They both run even sometimes waaay too fast (Wipeout64 - 457VI/s :w00t:) on my Celeron Coppermine 600@900 with ass kickin' combo of Glide64 and Voodoo5 6000 :D

The new Prescott will be even slower than previous P4...
Another "SSEx or die" CPU...

Well, the $778 Athlon64 FX-53 is currently kicking the ~$900 P4 Extreme Edition 3.4GHz in all sorts of gaming benchmarks, and I'm extemely happy with my 3200+ processor like I was with my 1800+ processor before it. Go AMD - if it weren't for ignorants who just buy from PC World and don't customise it for themselves, Intel wouldn't be having such a clear lead, and the Prescott is indeed a flop since the older Northwoods are generally faster and cheaper.

Athlon kicks ass right now. I believe in the future, Intel will completely be dominated in every way by Amd. My Athlon 3200+ rules and I will never go to intel for anything.

Well, if I'm correct, companies still buys intel's stupid processors, hence the higher price. So, I don't really expect them to go out of buisness anytime soon. And it would probably be a bad matter, too, as if intel is out of buisness, AMD could raise their prices.

^^ that and alot off ppl still buy prebuilts. Even tho alot of prebuilts now offer AMD PCs, most ppl looking for prebuilts will still get Intels because they're pretty much a household name at this day in age. Just like how they wouldn't consider buildilng their own system for various reasons, they'll also forgo AMDs for Intels.

Missinformation is also a deciding factor when buying a processor :P
I have read tons of times in the papers, well and friends, that their "Amd celeron" processors rock. Or that they can't buy AMD, since they're buggy and damage sooner. And the list goes on and on...

@Clements
nah Clements you should say so ;)
the "P5" is for sure no flop it is just starting. I remember good the times when P4 was announced i think it was arround the time p3 reached 1GHz and the p4 was to be starting with 1.3 or 1.4
and everyone was in the beginning so depressed because it did very bad against AMD and even against P3...
lets wait (like always in this business;) ) a little and see how the p5 is doing later with more "hzz".
But of course this will quite soon have an end (i guess 5 years or so) , i really hope that chip manufactures start as soon as possible to go for other ways to make CPUs more efficent then just by increasing the clockspeed.
but this is of course business which means keeping tech level as low as the competition it allows.
Also i realy donīt like the development of CPUs and ESPECIALLY GPUs regarding Powerconsuming, they are in my opinion jsut insane.. WAY TOO MUCH!!
But companys like transmeta which realy try something diffrent are struggeling low, why? because we are of course seeker of power, arnīt we?
^_~
no realy im working with an 1 GHz transmeta CPU tablet PC ... and its slow..-_- but it is fanless! and i think the power cunsumtion is VERY LOW.. so as a portable download station :D
(also like the new speedstep feature of AMD64) but i think im going off topic..
