OK, there are a couple of different types I've noticed. one is DVD-RAM/RW and DVD+/-RW. I'm not sure what the differences are but I've heard that RAM is crap. Or something to that effect. I don't really care about price and such right now, because it will be a while before I upgrade. But I'd just like to know the technical differences and what each is good for.

There was a description of all the dvd formats here on the for if you'd search. From what I remember, ram is the best format, but currently the most unsupported, after that comes the + series, and lastly the - series.

Theres a sony burner that does either + and - or all three, i cant quite remember, but its a top of the line burner, the one I was looking at before I realized i want a video card a bit more.
