View Full Version : Playstation2 VS. GC

Taking a look at the marketing and financial situation, Sony's Playstation2 beats hard GC. What's the problem with Nintendo? Marketing? the aim of their interest which is the very young? not too much games released?
I'm a Nintendo-fan but sometimes I get the feeling that the same thing happens when Nvidia tossed away 3dfx...

Methinks it's because nintendo's consoles (previously) hasn't been so good. Like no rpgs...and well, ya know.Sony, on the other hand, had excellent games to both ps and ps2. Thus is why they're leading. Their reputation won't simply drop. And nintendo's won't simply rise. Sony has aquired it over a long time, nintendo hasn't.

sony's Playstation is superb for the PSX & Ps2.
Nintendo really have not been a threat to sony apart from the N64.
But you must remember that Nintendo did bring much pleasure to familys all over the world with the nes & Snes way before the psx was a glint On the designers block.
sega also enthralled us with the superb Genesis & Mega Drive.
But as a whole Nintendo i feel with the GC has let themselves down & us the paying public.
its isn't what we expected or indeed wanted after the n64.
Infact what i think we all wanted was the next Gen (DVD/CD-Rom) N128 up and we just never got that superb range Games or Quality IMO.
Although if they give us a Conkers 2 on the GC i just might forgive them for the {}:{ Zelda Wind Wa**** so far ;)

softwarre is very important.
there are few good games on GC,but many on PS2.
GC didn't have FF,GTA,MGS,WE...
Now it got some, but it's too late...
------------------------------------------------------------------------
and,PS2 is always the best of the best of the best in asia.

Nintendo had built up an image that there console is only for kids and as such are not selling very well in the mature markets. They need to build up a more positive approach to the teens and adults market and never think about doing Cel shading ever again, especially to Zelda which imo is a franchise which has always appealed to the mature market.

I'm growing tired of such lacklustre 'next-gen games' that offer me no challenge or longevity. I'm simply wasting my money! I'm sticking to the N64 and Snes, which offer actual gameplay I like. Well unless Nintendo pull out another 10 triple A titles in one year like they did on the N64 instead of 2. What I'm saying is that all the next-gen consoles suck compared to N64. That's why I'm on this board.

Name me 10 triple A titles by Nintendo in one year for the N64:plain::getlost:

Which year do you want!
eg. 2000 was the year Perfect Dark, Zelda Majora's Mask, Conkers' Bad Fur Day, Banjo-Tooie and Paper Mario were released (weren't Mario Tennis and Golf released in 2000?) Maybe not 10, but it's still a lot for one year.
Plisco
June 13th, 2003, 18:22
Not quite 10, Mario Golf/ tennis were 2000 in states not in UK though, Paper Mario was released in Feb 2001 (states dunno about the UK). Also GC is barely a year old in the UK as well yet you compare its lack of triple A games to a dead console? Bit premature IMHO.
Moving back to topic slightly, GC's lineup this year could improve its current sales by quite a bit, F-Zero, 1080, wario world, final fantasy cc, mgs:twin snakes...many more??. As I said in my previous post appealing to the mature market is. I think this year and beginning of next will be key to Nintendo as it really is there make or break year.

Nintendo's problem through N64's entire lifetime and GCN's start was Yamauchi. He had no idea what gamers wanted anymore.
Iwata knows, though; he WAS a dev himself until he became Yamauchi's successor.
Just compare GBA-SP to all of Nintendo's previous designs if you don't believe me.
EDIT: Oh, and Clements: Your view is skewed quite a bit, because on N64, the majourity of good games are Nintendo's. And you know why? Because there were very, very few good 3rd parties dev'ing for N64.
Now with GameCube it's a little different; they actually have some 3rd-party support, but it seems like in-house games have suffered somewhat as a result (Wind Waker is pretty disappointing, but not because of cel-shading; Star Fox Adventures is a joke).

Well TAG :) The only thing lame is it happens to be true.
The X-box claimed that all their games would be exclusive to the x-box.
lol talk about lies ;)
The GC was gonna Sport some fantastic stuff exclusive to the GC only.

Uhm. Most of GameCube's best games are either A. Exclusive to the system (Metroid Prime, Skies of Arcadia Legends) or B. better on the GameCube (Burnout 2, TimeSplitters 2)
Not as much for Xbox, though. Oh well. But multiplatform games tend to be better on Xbox/GCN than PS2. The only exception I can think of offhand is Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance, because on the GC and Xbox they didn't use the stick, which is horribly retarded anyway.
But people seem to like it (maybe cause they bought it and don't want to feel ashamed) so each to their own
Um... OK... if you say so. I have 22 GameCube games. Most of them paid for by ME. I only regret paying for maybe 2-3 of them total.

I did say so each to their own
I am glad you paid for & enjoy the games you bought i really do.
If it floats ya boat Sail away i say.
but for me being a slight advantage being there the 1st world shattering, highly amazing time ever with brand new things like the Arcade machine
Atari Home consoles, Nes, Snes, Sega etc
I have kind of grown to expect more from a new Hyped release any newer Games Console.
The N64 (never let me down) The PSX & PS2 (never let me down)
You know my opinion on the Game Cube
Now i have to reformat so have a nice day.

Whose fault do you think that was? Nintendo got all big headed after the success of the snes, and thought they were the entire gaming market, so they made these realy stupid anal licensing policies and thought they could get away with it, but it turned out that they were wrong. N64 was the beginning of nintendos downfall, microsoft replacing them as second place is simply signing and sealing the deal.

i am only of interest in emulation of a console, personally, so that is what i had said. consoles of the self are not for me nearly as fun than with an emulator, and certainly they make the less interest from a standing point of the companies that make them also. for me anyway.

The original Quake is a pretty bad game.
Tenebrae is a remake of Quake.
Tenebrae uses bump maps and specular highlights on EVERYTHING, making them all look like plastic and horrible.
Tenebrae implements real light sources in place of ambient light + lightmaps, meaning the game is horribly dark except near the 4 light sources per level.
And finally, it does not make use of new graphics cards. It's the same as DOOM3. Anything more recent than a GeForce256 (OLD) can run it, you just need DOT3 and Cube Mapping support.

once I got a PC that was it. The problem with Gamecube was I think the RPG games actually leaving N64, all of them went to Playstaion in 1996. Now There is some Final Fantasy Cristal Chronicles coming out from Sqaure-Enix for Gamecube, will it actually put up Nintendo, maybe who knows.
Really the thing I think that really does it why Nintendo lost its power, the lisensing policy they have. Nintendo like has all this crap about liscensing, many games have been changed due to certian things in them, yet Conker's Bad Fur Day, probably would have been banned if Rare was not partially owned by Nintendo at the time.
(edit): Nintendo has to allow some bit of that stuff, itll get the Mature market back out, and heck RPG's might have somewhat a small return to Nintendo. Dont get me wrong Nintendo might still fall, but I think all companies fall sometime in their life, nothing lasts forever. (edit)
If I get another console system (Which I doubt) Im probably gonna get an Xbox, why do you ask me, well I find it really weird how all my life I have had computers (Ultimate - Play the game, former name of Rare), and consoles with Rare, I really think as if I have and will keep continuing to support Rare and all of their games. Microsoft may be a greedy company, but so what, they too will probably fall in a few years, now that Xbox has come out, it appears that Mac and Linux are slowly getting a larger part of the market, not much but they are slwly moving.

Gamecube needs more Games by Konami as well, they may have a few games on there, but like I think all of them are also on Playstation so Konami probably should have some games exclusive to Gamecube. Konami develops more for Gameboy, yes that is true, but most of their exclusive console games are on Playstation 2

Dude. Nintendo hasn't done any censoring in years.
Look at the massively excessive blood in Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance (for the record, Nintendo didn't order Midway to change the original MK's blood colour, but Midway still left MK2 SNES's blood as it was originally). Or how about BMX XXX? It's fully uncensored on GameCube, UNlike PS2 where Sony made them remove all topless nudity.
Macs have been gaining market share since before Xbox (iMac was the main 'big push' and OS X helped too)... and Linux's adoption rate is increasing probably because of Microsoft backing off on some of their strong-arm tactics against OEM's (for example, IBM is now using Linux for servers).
There's no way Microsoft will fall, period. Have you looked at their market capitalisation compared to other companies?

i think on this you are a dead wrong.
inevitable will all open source dominate everything.
yes not in 2 days, but maybe in 2 years or maybe in 202 years.
this is an inevitable thing for the open source is always to improvement, and also the most fast!
of everything on my computer (except windows) is the open source alternative the better:
Mozilla
The Gimp
Emule
1964
zsnes
quake2max
dscaler
vlc
cdex
dvdx
of only things not to have changed (yet), but will someday be ready and the better:
trillian pro (someday gaim or another will be the better, i am sure!)
nero (don't know of open source one, yet, that has this powers!) YET
ut2k3 (q2max, tenebrae, something will be of the better eventually!)
winamp (so many for the plugins makes it better than the cool player (so far))
Cool Edit (will i switch to audacity, when it has 2 key features of i am needing)
and windows the whole thing, for most of the things i am using are on it better (so far!)
in the end will all be open source, and with no errors for it to have been looked at all the most, by the most of the people!
this is the most exciting of emulation for me, for now in the future will so many games last forever that may die when the console/carts are thrown away and lost!

Linux mplayer would probably replace all of your media stuff if it had a win port. Mplayer supports every media format that exists, and it has about a million different features for streaming, filtering (including a built in 2xsai filter), and several others.
Hell, windows media player couldn't even try to compete with linux mplayer.

marioshroom....WHAT IS THE TOPIC OF THIS THREAD?!
The way I see it, the thing that PS2 has that the GameCube doesnt is....Piracy. Throughout Sony's history with consoles, i dont remember any long period of time where people werent pirating its playstation (2) games. Piracy = cheaper games, cheaper games = more systems sold, more systems sold = more kids pimping the system that they bought. This peer pimpage is probably much more effective than any super bowl commercial...think of all the people who buys stuff just cuz all their friends did (of course, no accusations...i have no idea what your exact thoughts where when you bought your PS2).
On the other hand, Nintendo has been going out of its way to fight piracy. Heh, GC disc dumps have only reciently been made...and when did the system actually come out? In the end, all that the GameCube can rely on is its few fanboys spreading the word and the shitty (US) commericals that nintendo pumps out.

Well, technicaly speaking, you are correct here, as the xbox took longer to crack than the PS2, so its popularity could have shot up before GC...but then again, I don't think any company would dare spend any money to take a census that in any way legitamizes piracy lest they be severely scruitinized and sued.

I have no doubt that Nintendo is shooting themselves in the foot with their hardcore Anti-Piracy, Anti-Emulation stance.
On top of that, go take a look at the rack for PS2 at your local video game store. Then take a look at the GCN's. Tell me you can't see how the GCN is viewed as a "kiddy" console. :plain:
I bought a GCN for Wind Waker (yes, it has a FEW other games I want, maybe 3 or so, but Wind Waker/The bonus disc is what sold it.) I am sorely dissapointed, and now that MQ was leaked, i'm regretting wasting my money. I would have been better off buying 1 of the 20 or so games I would like for the PS2.
Small side note: I can't believe how many people think there will be a 128-bit console. :geek:

Microsoft owns the rights for the Conker trademark. If the upcoming game is not a sequel to CBFD, then the next one will be, or the one after it, or whatever. The point is, that if there will ever be a sequel to CBFD, it will come out on the XBox, and that's what I meant.

i think there will be someday a quantum console, much less the 128 bit.
but i will still not a console have, and be playing of the much better quantum computer and ATI quanteon. and still probably play 1964 version 3.7
lol

I guess you dont get it, either your english is bad, or you are young. Anyway, lemme put it this way. In this thread, we are comparing how consoles are doing, not talking about the open-source movement/tenebrae/quantum computers (?!). If that is what youd like to discuss, make a thread for it :)

I dunno about the rest of you guys, but I think I would put 50/50 odds on nintendo never producing another console. If they did produce another one, I doubt it would sell much more than the dreamcast did.

of me to a "sarcastic" been. this is what a friend says.
also is my english not of the best, for anyone to see.
this point i was making:
console sales are irrelevant for eventually will all things be of emulation on very good computers which are the better every day!
this other point i am agreeing with alphawolf, and some others maybe.
GC sales are not of the best. they have lost outright to MS and sony. why? maybe because the piracy is the less, maybe for another reason such as the crap selection of games to a comparison with ps2. although also are the games not so great for an xbox, so how does it win? this is not for me to know!
if i was to be a guesser, nintendo will try again, but without more of a good game like super mario world was of n64 and of snes, then they will not have a success.
also will they maybe not have a success for sony and ms are mean bad companies to beat them easily.
this is too bad for me so i am a big fan of some nintendo games!

Being poor at a language does hide sarcasm pretty well, so forgive me for missing it.
Since that is the point that you were making, Id like to say very good computers would be irrelevant for eventually we would all have scorpians that hovar without flapping.
