linux app comparable to virtualdub

does anyone know of a linux app comparable to virtual dub that will allow me to encode video w/ either the divx codec or the xvid codec. no matter what video encoding program i use in windows it freezes my computer, and i have to do a hard-reboot. this has happened in both windows 2k and xp. thanks

Take a look at the mplayer man page, mencoder in particular makes it very easy to convert movies from one codec to another, but does not support editing them in any way.
