Is Link wearing white? If so, your graphics card may not be powerful enough.

As for the black screen, it is known that when you pause it takes a long time for the menu to appear, maybe your computer doesn't like this and just hangs. Try another graphics plugin, Glide64 (+eVoodoo) I would recommend.

Your specs, please?

then when press start to play, the whole screen goes black, I can hear what is going on and control it, but the whole thing is black! Does anybody know how to fix this?

Known issue. Wait a little and the menu will appear.

Most likely it's your graphics card. You could try to use Glide64+evoodoo and see what that can do for you. It would be helpful if you would post your specs though.
