is there a program that can capture a certain portion my screen into mpeg-1 format?

I think you need to download windows-media encoder, and capture it like a raw avi, and convert it to mpeg-1. This will give you the best result.

i meant capturing desktop movements to an avi or mpeg file.

I have Windows Media Encoder 7 and it does exactly what you want. plus it saves as a streamable WMV file.

thanks gent and allnatural. i used camstudio. it works nice. i have windows media encoder 9, it doesnt capture a certain part of the screen which is what i want. i used it to convert a flash movie to avi tha i made. that flash app can't save the movie to avi with all the details i want(animation-in-animation). i got sick of trying on flash so i thought i'd just capture it off my screen.
