How soon do you think DX9 will absolutely be needed? Cuz the way my computer has been acting u lately, im not sure its gonna handle a change like this.

P.S. I have done this before with DX8.1 and it ended up crashing my system. So I just wanna know before I download.

I can't think of any reason to upgrade myself, nor do I know of any games that will absolutely require it in the future yet. UT2k3 supports opengl, and doom 3 won't use directx.

anyone read the fine print to make sure there is no pallidum or whatever you call it?

Palladium is a hardware change, you wont be seeing any microsoft software require it until the longhorn OS. They might have DRM requirements in their EULA here though, usualy those requirements involve you allowing microsoft to update your computer everytime they find a security hole in their copyright protection code. SP1 already made you agree to this if you are using it though. Disabled or not, the automatic update service is always on in SP1 systems, unless you break it (windowsupdate still works with automatic updates killed).

You keep saying unless you break it, but you dont give details how to "break" it, if possible =p

Anybody else besides apprentice who reads this, maks sure you are aware of what your doing before following anything I say!

The easiest way I know of to perminantly disable any service is to point windows to the wrong location for the DLL. You could try to delete or modify the DLL, but next time you insert the windows cd, or if you have the service pack install files still on your computer, it will restore the first microsoft signed dll it can find.

The windows registry stores the dll location of the windows update service in this key, under the value name "ServiceDLL":

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\ Services\wuauserv\Parameters

Just change that value to something invalid, and the service wont ever start itself anymore

You can also do the same thing to the help service, which always re-enables itself everytime you use anything even relating to help files though not necessarily dependant on the help service, and imo is a waste of memory and has been the dependant of some pretty bad vulnerabilities, (namely the one where a URL link could cause IE to delete files in any directory). It's registry key is here:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\ Services\helpsvc\Parameters

Note this will also break some microsoft middleware diagnostic programs like the msinfo32 thingie (none of which I ever use).

There are no improvements in current games after downloading DirectX 9 right?

DX9 does work perfect! Fast and great.

am i right in thinking that the only way to see any improvement with dx9 is if i hav a dx9 supporting card, i.e radeon9700, GFfx or wateva new dx9 card. so having a gf4 is pretty irrelevent, i mean even new dx9 games aernt gonna take advantage of the api if the hardware doesnt right?

DX9 will do little for you graphically (AFAIK) but there are other parts to it, such as Directsound and Directinput that receive little optimisations here and their.

Directinput seems to have solved one of my probs I had with one of my joypads anyways - the computer now recognises it properly, and enables me to correctly callibrate it.

Alpha: why sit and break half the OS so you dont have to be so paranoid of MS hacking you or whatever your fears are? switch to a linux distro or something.

i don't mean to stir up trouble but you seem might paranoid about running windows on your hardware.. i'm not defending MS here but it's contradictive to install an os and break parts of it for the tiny tiny performance gain

Its for several reasons beyond that, primarily for the prevention of exploits. Besides, most of this stuff only took me about a few hours to figure out, I would have probably spent even more time looking for warezed firewall/antivirus/other software that everybody else uses for the same thing. :P

who is ranting against microsoft?

Vchat20
December 23rd, 2002, 03:47
This really isnt a Rant against MS, just an opinion:

Both MS and Apple were in the same boat ever since they started. Slightly buggy OS's. Until now, both have went it alone without help from other companies. Then Apple joined forces with RedHat to make a (99.9999%) flawless OS called OSX. Just wait and MS will follow through somehow and make a Linux based Windows OS. It will happen soon enough.

AlphaWolf

redhat? no, OSX is based on freeBSD, which is fairly similar to linux (in fact, they can run each others software natively), only not under the GPL.

Vchat20
December 23rd, 2002, 05:57
well, i thought it was linux myself. but still you get my point. Sonner or later MS with find out they need some outside help and will get it.

i'm about to format my computer, i'm thinking about screwing windows for good, but i still need it for programming purposes, so i guess it will stay
