Internet Download Manager 3.09 seems simpler & almost 1/3 faster than flashget. It can't download a bunch of files from a site however.

I;ve used win95 and ME for downloading on a 56k modem.
How come downloads with download mangers or other apps don't seem to download good unless they are in the forground, for example the window is selected??
Is it due to application priority. I want the manager to be able to download good, like when I am playing videogames.
Any suggestions/Solutions?

'Cuz those download managers are crap.
A good one is GetRight. It is quite advanced if you wish to use it to its fully extent, although if you don't touch any settings, it can be quite easy to use, and it works without selecting any settings.

If you are on a 56k dial up connection there is no real point in using a download manager since you wont get any difference. Personally I dont use them anyway, I pretty much get the same transfer speed either way:) :emutalk:

On the contrary, vamp. If you're using 56k it's a very good thing to have. Download managers allow you pause/resume and resume a download later...as well as using segments to speed up the download.
Isn't that handy? Plainly, it sucks if you don't use download managers.

I DO download medium-large files, and I think the best one I've used is Download Accelerator, is just an accelerator but it can resume, if yu're looking for something more serious go for ReGet Deluxe

Getright is the best afaik & imo!
It beats dap all the way. It isn't just as buggy, it has more functions, it's more advanced and it can download just as many segments at a time as dap can & more at that.
Trust me, you'll never wanna let it go once you've installed it. :)

What ever you choose, make sure you don't get managers with bandwitch wasting adds.

I've downloaded download accelerator and after a week it has downloaded 600 kb of banners (it was the time I had a 56k modem).

I can recommend a great DM, get Kontiki. I have DSL, and with normal downloading on IE without using a DM, I usually transfer about 200k-. With Kontiki, I accelerate to at least 1MB+. It's great, and easy as crap to get set up.
Get Kontiki here! (http://www.kontiki.com)

I prefer DAP myself. it works really well. I admit the ad's are there, but they dont bother me. plus I just LOVE the leech command. I found this site for tracks for my Monster Truck Madness 2 game, and they had TONS of tracks all on one page. I just used the Leech command and had like over 700 files ready to download!!! plus it has auto-shutdown and auto-disconnect capabilities.

That's not physically possible. A download manager can't let you download faster than what your modem can do, or faster than the download speed that your ISP caps you at.
Anyway, I use Flashget.

True , download menager splits file in parts , and its usefull when trying to download a fille from many servers - then it will see witch server is the festest and download from it - it wil not go over the connection speed limit

1MB is not over my connection speed, My communications are always at least 1.5MB/s. Check my sig, I have DSL.:D

Is DSL like 10 Mbits/s. ? Cuz 1,5 Mb x 8 = 12 Mbit

Im over a network, my network is 100mb/s, but relations to the modem is 10mb/s, my modem's communications to the internet is usually around 1.5 to 2.0mb/s.

Go broadband. When you download 3mbits per second, download managers are quite useless, especialy if you use a better browser than IE, such as mozilla, which has the built in ability to resume timed out downloads.
Oh, and getright has spyware. Yeah I know they said they removed it, but I don't like their choice of words:
So, the most current releases of GetRight do not contain Radiate or Conducent advertising systems.
So that means they don't guarentee getright to be free of crap like gator, bonzi, or the countless other spyware systems that are out there, and their privacy policy doesn't guarentee protection from these programs either.

Well, i don't critiscism other download managers like flashget. My personal favorite is getright. And dap is no good in terms compared to the other download managers.

Get Opera (http://www.opera.com). It is a VERY quick browser and small and it has a built in transfer manager (Screenshot below) that can be inside the main window or in its own window. Haven't used any other browser since Opera.

yep. I was using Gozilla at one point but it had too many downsides. for one, VERY small buttons. confusing interface. and it still didnt download very fast at most points.

yeah , started with Go! Zilla to, then GetRight and now I'm using FlashGET - seams to be quite fast and acurate ( no more "File downloaded 105%" like in GetRight :P )

Yeah. I have only had that problem once with DAP. it was while trying to download some SNES rom. forgot what it was. it went over like 145% before it finally finished.

If you insist on using internet explorer, and want a download manager thats not dodgy like all of the ones mentioned in this thread so far, try this:
http://francis.dupont.free.fr/downloadplus/
Not only is it actualy useful to broadband users unlike the others, its free and its open source.
