Hdd crash -> options

I had / still have a IBM 75GXP 120GB 3.5" that crashed the other day, unf I have around 2.5 GB of backups that I need from the disk. :/

I've tried it in 3 different computers and same results in all, nothing.

So, what are my options?

Atm I'm thinking..

1) Forget about the backups and the hdd..
2) Pay for someone to restore the data, although I have nothing to base a fair judgement on what it will cost..

Ps. Any help really appreciated :)

Cheers Remote

#EDIT#

If someone could move this to techtalk instead that would be neat :p

Moved.

As for your problem, I dont really have any idea. Depends on how valuable the data is. Data recovery using a company can be quite expensive...

99% of it I can get back from the internet :p But the important 1 % seems to be lost forever unf.. I heard that 100 USD for data extraction from broken hds could be a pretty close estimate of the cost and that's def worth it :) Gonna look into it more..

Why didn't i keep those damm vintage porn movies from the 70's on cd's :p

You have my empathy Remote. I had a 60GXP die on me once, part of a RAID 0 setup. Thankfully everything important was also on a third drive. I've sworn off IBM.

I've heard variable reports of cost, usually the bare minimum is $100 or so, I'm going to guess at closer to $400 though :/ All depends who you go to, how much they charge, how difficult a job it is etc

If the data is important (ie a large main Uni assignment) then you'll just have to swallow the cost :(

Here's another thing i've heard. Put the hard drive in a waterproof or ziplock bag. Put the hard drive in the freezer, and freeze it. I have no idea how long to freeze it though, but when you think it's ready, take it out, put it in your computer, and copy as much as you can before it thaws out or doesn't work.

really? cus i am thinking of trying that :)
EDIT: k i am not freezing any hard drives any where, but just saying, if the heads and the disk were frozen, how would the platter be able to spin and the heads be able to move down on to the non-spinning platter?

If your bios still detects it, I can probably get 99% of your data back. Msg me online and fill me in on the details.

You're lucky guy because there was 99.99999% chance to make big boom ...

2 All: DONT DO ANYTHING LIKE RUNNING FROZEN DRIVE, TV etc
First and final warning. Keywords: Condensation, humidity, short circuit...

I would shoot down that bastard who has spreaded this "advice" over the net ...

Best things if drive is still can be detected is to try recovery tools like Easy Recovery Pro 5.12 and higher , Recover4All Pro, PQ Lost and Found, GetDataBack.

And then BUY a DVD-RW DRIVE and remember word "backup". Modern ATA drives is cheap home devices. And i saw dead $30K drives from $12M mainframe computer. That's why tape backup devices is still in use..

Then what part of "put the hard drive in a zip lock bag" did you not understand? That where the water will not get near the hard drive.

There's still internal condensation, as well as water condensating from the air on things like the pins of the harddrive etc.

i can imagine the upside down thing working though, the heads could be loose along with the platter, and putting it upside down would make the platter sit on the heads, sounds more believable than the "go and chuck your harddrive in an icebox" remedy, its prolly just a coinkidink that it'll work afterwards

If the HDD is detectable, but not usable/can't boot off it, you should do the following:

1: If you don't have one, try to get ahold of another HDD to back up on (may not be required, though), install your OS ect. ect. on it.

2: Get a good program that allows you to partition your HDD without formating. Scan your HDD to try and get more of an idea what parts of your HDD died, then section off the bad part of it. The harddrive *may* still be usable, you just have to find out what parts to section off and make your computer not recognize it. This is... hard to explain. Most programs won't let you do all that, but things like RQ Tools will allow you to, and isn't really complicated to use. There's probably more programs out there that will as well, RQ Tools is just the only one that I have experience with.
Good luck. :)

Since Remote doesnt seem to be replying:

His HD is NOT detected by BIOS. (And yeah, he has tried different cables and on different computers).

Eh. Partition it? What the hell are you talking about? He wants to recover his data.

A lot of work last days so haven't had time to read unf, lots of good suggestions but can't try any of them out atm. Thanks anyways :)

It does NOT show up in bios, tried as master / slave / cable select / force drive present etc. It doesn't matter if i change cable or set the options in bios manually. From what it seems 75GXP suffered from design faults / manufacturation faults so perhaps I will get a new baby but really need and want that data back. :/

Got the url to a norweaigan company and going to call them next week and see what the cost could ev be to get it restored, also thinking of trying ontrack products to see if they could get some output from it. Anyone tried it? Kind of get the impression the softw Kahrenzas mentioned is more or less the same...

Did try it upside down / vertical etc but not any change unf.

I can see now why there is a mass lawsuit.. :p
