Donkey Kong Multiplayer Problem

Hi,
I have a problem with my DK 64: I cant play the multiplayer. I tried various roms and emulator versions of project 64 and used different controller plugins (of course with an ticked “pluged” box and selected keys for more than one controller) but whatever I do, the logo in the main menu stays grayish and there is this error sound when I try to select it.

Whats wrong? Do I have to play the singleplayer to a particular a progress or whats wrong? Can somebody help me?

Except this problem my emulator is doing fine- all the other games and multiplayer modes do their job.

Well, I seem to remeber in the authentic N64 game that you did need a certain amount of bananas in order to unlock the multiplayer mode. I think that this is just the actual game. How far are you?

You need to unlock all the standard characters in single player first and win 1 Battle Crown. It's not available from the very start.
