well as there dosnt seem to be a Timer for it
(Or is there a visible count down ? )

But if not, have you tried putting the Flying mario Cheat on & flying up ?System 1 Specs:

|Now once you have put on all the cheats you want
close the menu like the picture below.
I'm not saying this will cvure your prob on the stairs, but i know it will help you other places.
but any way thats how you use the "Flying Mario" & any cheats
