Wiimm had been analysing the Mario Kart Wii network traffic since November 2012 and had already written a helper tool named MKW-ANA. And so he decided to get together with Leseratte and other people to create the Wii-Server Project, known as "Wiimmfi" to replace Nintendo's servers for Mario Kart Wii and for other games if they were to have been shutdown.

Preparing A Wii For Wiimm-Fi:
WARNING: DOING THIS WILL VOID YOUR WII'S WARRANTY. DO NOT DO THIS IF YOU DO NOT WANT IT VOIDED.
  Spoiler:

*LETTERED STEPS INDICATE A CHOICE. CHOOSE ONE OR THE OTHER OR NONE AT ALL. DO NOT CHOOSE MORE THAN ONE.

1. Have any SD Card (2 GB SanDisk recommended) and make sure it has a lot of space on it. The amount of space you need depends on how you choose to use Wiimm-Fi; I recommend at least 1 GB of free space. If you have a SDHC card that is fine too, but they aren't compatible with a few applications.

2. Turn on your Wii and go to Wii Settings then click "Internet" and then "Console Information".

3. Write down/remember/somehow keep your MAC Address in front of you and then go to http://please.hackmii.com where you are going to download the exploit known as LetterBomb and enter your MAC Address there and your System Menu version (U = NTSC-U, E = PAL, J = NTSC-J, K = NTSC-K).

4. Bundle the HackMii Installer if you want the Homebrew Channel, aka HBC, which you will need in order to play other games online outside of Mario Kart Wii easily. (It can also be done with Riivolution only, but it's complicated). Don't bundle it if you're just going to be playing Mario Kart Wii and have no need of Homebrew.

5. Now fill out the captcha and then click to cut either the red or blue wire (doesn't matter).

6. Extract the contents of this ZIP file to the ROOT of your SD Card (the drive letter). You can delete the readmes after extracting.

6a. (if you didn't bundle the HackMii Installer) Download this file and put it on your SD card root: http://www.mediafire.com/download/525k67j9asffvdm/boot(2).elf Rename it to boot.elf.

7. Turn your Wii on and go to the Wii Message Board. Look at the recent week for a red letter with a bomb on it. Click it.

8. After your Wii spazzes out which is completely normal for an exploit, which is what LetterBomb is, Riivolution or the HackMii Installer will load (exploits are also what void the warranty so once you do this, you cannot undo it).

9. You're left with two options, you can either:

9a. (if you didn't bundle the HackMii installer) Install the Riivolution channel then exit to the Wii Menu.

9b. (if you bundled the HackMii Installer) Wait for HackMii installer to determine whether HBC can be installed on your Wii or not. After that, if it says "BootMii can be installed as Boot2", you have the chance of getting the BEST BRICK-PROTECTION POSSIBLE FOR ANY WII and you should jump for joy. If it doesn't and says "BootMii can be installed as IOS" (which is for most Wii owners), then your Wii is newer and you can't get BootMii as Boot2. Install HBC (which also installs BootMii as Boot2 or IOS, depending on how old your Wii is) and then exit the HackMii Installer and go to the Wii Menu.

10. Delete the "HAEA" folder in the following location on your SD Card: SD Card:\private\wii\title. This contains LetterBomb and you shouldn't keep an exploit after you've already used it; it's risky.

Preparing A Wii-U's vWii Mode For Wiimm-Fi:

WARNING: DOING THIS WILL VOID YOUR WII-U'S WARRANTY.

An SDHC card will NOT work! You also will need a working Super Smash Bros. Brawl (SSBB) game disc with a data file that has NO stages in the Stage Builder; it should be empty.

2. Download the exploit known as SmashStack from here: http://wiiubrew.org/w/images/4/4e/Smashstack.zip

3. Extract the contents of the ZIP to the root of your SD Card (the drive letter).

3a. If you want Riivolution only, download this file: http://www.mediafire.com/download/525k67j9asffvdm/boot(2).elf and put it on the root. Rename it to boot.elf.

3b. If you want the Homebrew Channel (HBC) or more, download this file: http://www.mediafire.com/download/gztc5191dyga65c/boot(3).elf and put it on the root. Rename it to boot.elf

4. Launch SSBB and go to the Stage Builder.

5. After the game spazzes out, which is normal for an exploit, either Riivolution or the HackMii Installer will load (exploits are also what void the warranty so once you do this, you cannot undo it).

6. You're left with two options, you can either:

6a. (if you're loading Riivolution) Install the Riivolution channel then exit to the vWii Menu.

6b. (if you're loading the HackMii Installer) Wait for HackMii installer to determine whether HBC can be installed on your Wii or not. Then Install HBC and then exit the HackMii Installer and go to the vWii Menu.

7. Delete the "RSBX" (E = NTSC-U, P = PAL, J = NTSC-J, K = NTSC-K) folder in the following location on your SD Card: SD Card:\private\wii\title. This contains SmashStack itself and you shouldn't keep an exploit after you've already used it; it's risky.

Getting/Using Wiimm-Fi On A Properly Prepared System:

  Spoiler:
*LETTERED OR ROMAN NUMERAL'ED STEPS INDICATE A CHOICE. CHOOSE ONE OR THE OTHER OR NONE AT ALL. DO NOT CHOOSE MORE THAN ONE.

Method 1 (MKWII ONLY!) - Custom Tracks Grand Prix Revolution (CTGP-R) | EASY:

1. Download the latest version of CTGP-R from here: http://www.chadsoft.co.uk and extract it to the root of the SD Card after it has finished downloading.

2. Depending on what you did... you can either:

2a. (if you have Riivolution only) Load Riivolution and then make sure the option "CTGP Revolution Channel" is set to "Enabled" then turn "Copy MKW Save to the SD Card" on "Enabled" then click "LAUNCH".

2b. (if you have Homebrew) Load the Homebrew Channel then load the CTGP-R app... (you won't be able to copy your save over doing this, so I recommend 2.b.i.) or

2b.i. Load HBC then load the Riivolution HBC app--install it to your Wii Menu as a channel if you want. Now turn the correct options on and then click "LAUNCH".

3. After the CTGP-R channel loads, follow the on-screen instructions and set up your preferences (I recommend having automatic updates ON and Save game on the SD Card? ON). When it prompts you to update, do so. Once the update finishes, you will be able to go online.

For more information about CTGP-R, check out this thread: http://mkboards.com/forums/threads/ctgp-revolution-v1-03-0050-no-homebrew-channel-needed.380/

Method 2 (ALL SUPPORTED GAMES) - The Homebrew Channel Wiimm-Fi Patcher | INTERMEDIATE:
  Spoiler:

1. Download the HBC-based Wiimm-Fi patcher from here: http://chadsoft.co.uk/downloads/autowiimmfipatcher0.3.zip and extract it to the root of the SD Card.

2. Put your disc in and load HBC, then load the Wiimm-Fi patcher app (YOU HAVE TO DO THIS EVERY TIME YOU WANT TO PLAY ONLINE).

3. Watch this video for more information:

Method 3 (ALL SUPPORTED GAMES) - Riivolution | HARD:

  Spoiler:

1. Download WiiScrubber from here: http://www.wii-homebrew.com/download/nintendo-wii-downloads/pc-tools/wiiscrubber/download, then set it up, and then extract the files main.dol and StaticR.rel for the ISOs of the supported games you want to play online.

2. Patch the two files to Wiimm-Fi using a tool that can do it.

3. Make a folder structure on your SD card and place your two patched files in it.

4. Make an XML that is coded to show options on the Riivo menu for your folder structure and is able to load your folder structure.

5. Launch the game and you should be able to play online. YOU MUST LAUNCH USING THE RETAIL DISC, THAT IS ALL RIIVOLUTION ACCEPTS.

Method 4 (ALL SUPPORTED GAMES) - Wiimm-Fi ISO Patcher + USB Loading | ADVANCED:
  Spoiler:

1. Have a decently sized USB Hard Drive or USB Stick. I recommend at least 50 GB (though I use 8 GB, which sucks).

2. Softmod your Wii. Read this to learn how: http://www.wiihacks.com/recommended-faqs-guides-tutorials-only/96886-guide-softmod-any-wii.html FOLLOW THE GUIDE VERY CAREFULLY OR YOU COULD BRICK YOUR WII

3. Set up your drive for USB loading. I recommend the format FAT32, that's what I use. Check out this guide for more information on setting up FAT32: http://www.wiihacks.com/recommended-faqs-guides-tutorials-only/96770-guide-fat32.html . You can also check out the other guides for the other formats, but ye. Also check this out if you want to play Gamecube games: http://www.wiihacks.com/recommended...v2-10-play-gamecube-backups-your-usb-hdd.html

4. Obtain the ISOs of the games you want to play online somehow. MKBoards does not promote piracy so do not ask how to obtain one publicly here! You can just LEGALLY rip your purchased game discs into ISOs using the WiiFlow USB Loader, Configurable USB Loader, or the Homebrew Application CleanRip. This is highly recommended over illegal methods and usually gives ISOs that have no errors!

5. Depending on the game in question...

5a. (for MKWII) Download this and extract the contents into any folder on your computer: http://download.wiimm.de/wiimmfi/patcher/mkw-wiimmfi-patcher-v3.7z .

5b. (for other games) Download this and extract the contents into any folder on your computer: http://download.wiimm.de/wiimmfi/patcher/wiimmfi-patcher-v2.7z .

6. Copy all ISOs you want to patch into this folder.

7. Windows Users start the file called create-image.bat. Mac/Linux users start the file called create-image.sh .

8. When all the games are patched, they will be in a folder called wiimmfi-images.

9. Copy the contents of this folder to your properly configured USB Drive or USB Stick.

10. Load the patched ISOs for the supported games using your favorite USB Loader and then you can play online on them.

Wiimm-Fi Statistics Pages:

Unlike Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, Wiimm-Fi offers real-time public online statistics!

Wiimm-Fi Statistics Page: http://wiimmfi.de/stat
Players Online For Each Game: http://wiimmfi.de/game
Wiimm-Fi Mario Kart Wii Statistics Page: http://wiimmfi.de/mkw

Wiimm-Fi Banning Process:

Unlike Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, where reported hackers didn't really get dealt with, Wiimm-Fi has a very active team that moderates online activity on the servers. If you believe someone is cheating, all you need to do is provide on this thread (http://forum.wii-homebrew.com/board42-kreativitaet/mkw-server-project-english/51720-about-banning/) the following: video proof or picture proof and their player ID (PID), which can be found on the statistics pages when that person is playing. After which, the team will review the accusation and then make the appropriate decision.

What is NOT allowed on the ENTIRE server:
-MAC Spoofs
-S/N Changers
-Allow Offending Mii Names Code

What is NOT allowed to be used on the servers in Worldwides, Regionals, or places where cheats are unwanted (these are ALLOWED in Private Rooms where hacking is okay with the host):
-Item Codes/Mods
-Glitching
-Speed Codes/Mods
-VR Codes/Mods higher than 9999 or lower than 5000
-Dolphin Emulator (if your PC can't handle it, because lower FPS = you'll lag spots)
-Advantageous Texture/Model Hacks, such as messing with Terrain
-Moonjump Code
-Custom Tracks over Regular Tracks (you will freeze the room)
-Position Codes/Mods
-Timer Codes/Mods (not including menu textures)
-Anything that affects the other players significantly and gives the user an unfair advantage over them

What IS allowed to be used on the servers in Worldwides, Regionals, or places where cheats are unwanted:
-Character/Vehicle Changer Codes/Mods
-Hacked Mii Names
-Foreign ISOs
-StaticR.rel Region Line Color Edits
-StaticR.rel Custom Region Patches
-Non-Advantageous Texture/Model Hacks
-Music Hacks
-BRSAR Edits
-LAN Adapters
-Custom Tracks from CTGP in CTWWs
-Anything that only affects you, not the other players, and doesn't give you an unfair advantage over them

If you are banned on the Wiimm-Fi servers, that is it: GAME OVER. There are no ways around it unless you get an entire new console. You have been warned: DON'T CHEAT ON THESE SERVERS.

Error Code 60000:

This error code means your Friend Code isn't in the Wiimm-Fi database. Use this website: http://wiimmfi.profeibe.at/index.php and enter your codes in there for your games. You will need to wait up to 24 hours for the friend code to be put into the database.

For information on more error codes, go here: http://wiimmfi.de/error

Useful Downloads For Wiimm-Fi:

http://maschell.de/pidtool.zip - This is an alternative to the Web Formula mentioned above. This only works with the Homebrew Channel. Try the Web Formula if you don't have HBC. If the Web Formula doesn't work, or if you just don't want to use the Web Formula, download this and run it using the Homebrew Channel. You will still probably have to wait up to 24 hours for your friend code to be put into the database.

http://www.mediafire.com/download/vtb7avebce2cmde/RMCE01.gct - This is the Ultimate License Unlocker Code for Mario Kart Wii by mdmwii. If you have to make a new license, use this code to unlock everything and have 3 stars instantly. It will save you time and you can get back online much faster. I will not tell you how to load this code or how I made it, so as to prevent the spread of cheating. That, you will have to figure out on your own or you can just unlock everything all over again (which doesn't take that long).

http://www.mediafire.com/download/h21m5ywu41bsxwl/RMCE01(2).gct - This is the Change Character/Vehicle Combination In Online Races Code for Mario Kart Wii by MrBean35000vr himself. This will allow you to press start or + (depending on the controller used) on a VR screen (this only works in public rooms like Worldwides and Regionals) to change your character, vehicle, and even drift type without having to leave the room. Make sure to rename the file to RMCE01.gct Once again, I will not tell you how to load it. You need to figure that out on your own.

Legal Information:

http://www.copyright.gov/title17/92chap12.html

This DMCA policy makes the use of Wiimm-Fi LEGAL as long as the real servers are shut down, which they are. Nintendo could get upset about this, but they don't have the legal permission to do anything about it anymore.

TL;DR You don't have to worry about getting in trouble when using these servers. MKBoards also would not allow this at all if it were illegal.

When playing, don't forget to show your appreciation to Wiimm and his team. This server project has honestly been jaw-dropping with the results that have come out of it. Thank you Wiimm, Leseratte, and the rest of the team so much for doing this, seriously.

This may be legal, but a side-effect of it is that you can now run Wii games from burned DVDs.

But maybe they could make a Super Smash Bros. server too?

...Wii has always used DVD. And that's exactly why I pointed it out.

I was referring to burning dvd's.
The newer, black wii's, I believe; have option of reading burnt dvd's removed.

Most computers still have DVD-R(W) drives, and I think many Blu-Ray drives can write to DVD too.

Anyway, I'll see if I can grab a Wii at a store liquidation.

I Don't recommend burning Wii backups, Usb loading is a much better option.
Once you have bought the wii, follow the Softmod any Wii guide without diverting from it.
