[REQUEST] Black Frame Insertion for CRT image quality

Hello there!

I registered here to let you guys know of a method called "LightBoost Hack" which enables users with a 120Hz monitor to get rid of ghosting and blur and achieve CRT like fast image quality without any negative side effects in image quality.

Simply put: CRT quality and smoothness on an LCD is possible!
For emulator gaming on an LCD this is a godsend.

---------------------------------------------------

I'm not yet allowed to post links, so for more information just type

LightBoost HowTo

into google and check out the first result/page.

---------------------------------------------------

The MAME developer team is incorporating "Black Frame Insertion" which enables 60fps/60Hz gaming to make use of the LightBoost Hack. That way you can game on your 120Hz LCD and enjoy as good as a picture quality and smoothness as on an good old CRT.

Again, no links allowed for me just yet, so for more information just type

Black Frame Insertion

into google and check out the first result/page.

It would be very nice to see the Mupen 64 dev team to incorporate this into their software, as it is pretty simple to patch and achieves so much with it.

Thanks for your time!

Mupen64 is not developed anymore. And the link to the MAME change is not available anymore. And how should this work when 120 fps is not possible? 60Hz/120Hz is not really common on n64

120Hz/FPS is impossible on the Nintendo 64.

Plus, I know very few people who own 120Hz "monitors" (they are those soap opera 120Hz "Ultra-Smooth" TVs).

And it's like you want this to be on every emulator :p

Black frame insertion is a workaround for 120Hz displays when there's no control over input video speed; television, for instance, is only going to be provided at certain fixed rates.

Computer users have the brilliant option of selecting to change the refresh rate via either monitor or graphics card settings. You'd pretty much have to do this anyway, since using frame insertion on a program-by-program case wouldn't solve the same issue on an OS-wide scale.

Even if you are using a 'TV' as a computer display, from the computer's perspective there's no difference from an ordinary monitor.

However, 60fps during 120Hz is definitely possible.
And to make 60fps during 120Hz "look" like 120fps during 120Hz, you do black frame insertion.

Good web-based animation showing black frame insertion:
Google "testufo" (Blur Busters UFO Motion tests) and select "Black Frame Insertion Demo" at the upper-right corner. If you only have a 60Hz monitor, this does a web-based demonstration of 30fps during 60Hz with reduced motion blur. It flickers a bit too much because it's flickering at 30Hz. But with a 120Hz computer monitor, you can do black frame insertion at 60fps during 120Hz to reduce motion blur. Also, 120Hz computer monitors are getting more common -- including the LightBoost models and the overclockable models.

It's already been established that implementing this feature would be too complex for too little benefit for too little people.

Plus, Mupen64 is discontinued. Keeping arguing for the implementation of this feature in this emulator is like beating a dead horse.
