Problem playing on kaillera servers

Hello me and a friend have recently installed project64 kaillera and have found a server close to us but when we try and play a game it works but we can not press any buttons also we have the same version of ROM and we both have windows xp but i have now noticed i can press buttons on single player and he cant tried different controller configs and all plugins and a combination of keyboard and controller with all said plugins and when im in the same server as him i cant press buttons ither so its just when we link up it doesn't work does anyone have a solution?
