The brand
There was a time when 'Nintendo' was synonomous with console gaming, but times have changed and 'PlayStation' has taken that throne. Microsoft made some strides in that department with the XBOX, but Sony, on the global scale, still holds the chains. Selling over 100 million machines twice is an amazing feat for any console developer. Do NOT underestimate the power of a brand name.
The competition
The PS2 OUTSOLD the XBOX360 six out of the seven months since its launch. 'Nuff said . The PS2 is 6 YEARS old... it has consistently outsold this so-called 'next-gen' console. The 360's flagship titles will almost all be delivered in equal or better quality on the PS3, many of them right at launch. Not to mention all the games only available to the PlayStation... Metal Gear, Final Fantasy (*drool), Devil May Cry, Virtua Fighter, Gran Turismo...
OK saying that you are going just because the brand is just stupid, it's like "hey let's drink a lot of Coca Cola because is the most popular and best selling soda around the world". Nno matter how many consoles they have sold, X-BOX came some time after PS2, and people trusted PS2 because part of the sucess of PS1. XBox was new to the masses...
The samurai
Japan. Land of the video games. The original XBOX did fine in North America and Europe, but it was an utter failure in Japan. The XBOX 360 continues to struggle in the land of the rising sun. What kind of launch party has consoles left over? Not a fuckin' PLAYSTATION launch party, not in Japan anyway, hell no. An army of squinty eyed, fanatically dressed, Japanese gamers will line up for DAYS in anticipation for PS3 launch.
The samurai? please... "oh the powerful samurai, the oh american stuff is bad, anime is better than anything, otaku for life..." blah blah. Wii might sell better than PS3 in your "samurai" Japan, only 80 000 PS3 for Japan? they will be hell more expensive then, and people will buy the Wii instead there
The ray of blue
Blu-Ray will make a difference. It may fail as a movie format, but the amount of space available for software developers to use will allow for huge enviroments with amazing detail. Microsoft can compete for awhile with fancy compression techniques, but in the end, the extra space in Blu-Ray discs will hold some of the greatest, most epic scenes you've ever witnessed. Believe it. When developers start combining the Blu-Ray medium and the Cell processors to their fullest potential, games will have reached a new level of awesomeness and the PS3 by that time will no longer be $500.
Fancy compression? Anyone who says that is just an ignorant. There's no point in using fully uncompressed textures. I already discussed this but I'm gonna say it again, the developers will be like "Yarr, we did it, we filled a 25 Gb drive with fully uncompressed textures that won't be noticed by human eye while playing, and fully HD videos" You will be whining: "but CGI videos makes a game cool, that's very important" Guess what? CGI doesn't make a game good, a good gameplay does that... Just imagine a game with the gameplay of Superman 64 with full HD CGI videos
The internetzorz
Free online. This is something I heartely admire. In the age of successful subscription based MMORPGS, Sony continues to deliver free online. I have said it countless times, I will not pay for a game I've already bought. When I boot that shit up, it better damnwell give me the whole of its existence without me pulling out my credit card. If anything, this tells fans of PlayStation, " Here you go guys, have fun". What a pat on the back. It almost makes a tear run down my face.
Yeah free, yeah right. They will charge you for every GT HD track and car. What stop them for let's say, charge you for every fighting character in a game, or more weapons in a FPS, etc...
Don't forget that controllers batteries are like Ipods, they are sealed inside them, if the battery life is over (if doesn't explode) you will have to buy a new controller.
Don't forget that Sony may go bankrupt.
Another fact why PS2 was so popular? I'll tell you why. The same reason as PS1: piracy. In USA is less common, but for example, everyone here in not rich countries (ask WhiteX) knows that a PS2 owner has 99.9% of their games pirated an their console modded. A lot of people buyed a PS1 instead of a N64, and a PS2 instead of a gamecube because of this, you can get games cheaper.
Of course you won't gain access to the on-line game services if you mod your console, but a lot of people doesn't care about and make the sacrifice
If the Blu Ray format is not successful no one would like to buy a Blu Ray burner and then no piracy
And finally, Sony sucks, and that's the true...
