Future game developers!

Hey there!

I am going to be a game developer sometime in the near distant future and make games :p

My plans are to become a director, artist for concepts, designs, landscapes, character designs, textures, 3D models, paintings (digital), story-boards and throw in my ideas and suggestions.

I also want to beta test games for possible bug squashing and be AWAY from any programming at all :p

The idea of designing a game with an editor, like being able to place objects, terrain or any details into the game's engine without any programming knowledge, and being able to make events or make them into a story-board, makes me anticpiate just doing it! :D

Any of you people out there interested in becoming a game developer?
You don't even have to be what I am interested in, you could be a programmer or even a story-writer :D

You can't make a game without programming, it is impossible. It's like baking a cake without an oven.

Good luck

Hi Janet:

As ScottJC suggested, you are about to be a level editor not a game developer. As far as I know, to DEVELOP a game, you must program it in some way. You may use a very new and very easy programming languaje, but programming languaje at all.

Anyway, if you are a

director, artist for concepts, designs, landscapes, character designs, textures, 3D models, paintings (digital), story-boards
you may associate with a good programer (or a team of them) to develop the game, as developing needs programming but developing is not ONLY programming.

Good luck. We are waiting for playing your games!

Game development is nowhere near programmer orientated..

I've taken courses, and game development means to develop the game through the use of programmers, artists, directors and so on.

Development is a term which means to create, and the game is in development.
Programming is the term you want to use.

I am going to be a game developer because I am going to "make games" with my artistic talent along with programmers and the rest of the team.

Look up any game development site that gives you the terms of the gaming industry :p

Doomulation: The point of my idea to creating a game is from being able to make a game through my artistic abilities and talent.
Making a game proves me to be successful, not given money or luxury, the knowing to create a game is the reward itself.
I love creating and I am highly creative.

It isn't? heh, name one part of the game that isn't controlled by the programming. The Art and 3d models are just data which the programming deals with to output it on the screen. If you really want to be a game director you mustn't underestimate the Programming side of game development.

Even as a director, you will have to program a little bit, theres a thing called Pseduocode which is english-like code, if you cannot understand basic programming it is a little like building your game blind because someone else will have to interpret your ideas and design their code accordingly and because you don't have a clue what your code building lacky has done if you're not happy you won't even be able to tell him which part of his code doesn't work properly!

Your place in a game development team would solely be art and 3d modeling with the skills you have decided on, ultimately you won't even have to talk to the programmers because thats not your place.

If you don't understand basic programming terminology it is going to be difficult to be a director, that plus i doubt any company will hire you directly into that position, most likely they'd hire you to do art and nothing else at first. The code is the most important part of the game and never forget that.

Game development does require more than programming but you cannot deny that it is much more nessicary than you give it credit for. You can't make games purely with "Your artistic talent"... That's like saying i'm going to start a rock band purely with my loud talking talent.

I never said I knew nothing about programming.

I tried programming a few years back and I have an idea as to how it works.

You know, I know SOME programming and editing to get where I want, but I am by no means a programmer.

I understand the importance of knowing some basic programming to get into it, but I am not a programmer.

A good idea is to write a novel or a graphic novel than, if it interest the right people, gather a team to develop a game based on it.

EDIT: also good is to develop a mod for an already known game, it is easier than to code an engine from scratch.

Janet,

Read WhiteX's EDIT. THIS is where you should start if you want to break into game design. Getting into a software company is somewhat like playing popular with the kids in high school. You've got to be bold, well liked, and do a damn good job while doing it. To make a mod, you need basic programming/scripting ability as well as what you describe. If you put your heart and mind into it, you'll come out ahead. I wish you the best. Good luck!

Azimer, I totally agree with you there.

But there are also other ways of getting into the industry :)

My girlfriend, the programmer, has already been into the industry.
I know that knowing people who were hired into the industry can get you a big chance at getting into it!

So my chances of getting in are high, especially with someone who knows how to program and understands what I am saying :)

Not everyone in the industry is going to understand what I want, but illustrating it out and doing some BASIC programming CAN help.

And modding, I agree there! Modding CAN transform your idea into a 3D world for programmers to undersetand you more.

I'll talk to my girlfriend about a mod :)
But who knows, we started with a game engine already, but she is making the possibility of playing and other such things possible.

And thank you Azimer, I truly hope to land into the industry :D

Good but
Desire != good idea
I suggest you talk to your guidance counselor and discuse what you really like. Why do I say this? You might be entering into something you can do but you might be entering into something that you thought was cool but will hate doing. Then it becomes a drag and you drop out wasting your life in essence and making everyone miserable around you.

Take my advice don't pick a profession you will burn out in fast. Cool is not always what you'll be happy with doing all the time.

The decent one
About game developing in general:

There are a lot of aspects when it comes to game-developing, but that's something you already know ;). Before going into game development it's necessary you know "something" about all the aspects to get an idea what is the best way to develop a game. Basic knowledge about all the subjects isn't even needed, you just need to know what it is and where the name stands for and why it's important that you will use that in a game (a good way to get started is searching for information on google about the big string of subjects you stated ;)).

If you read a lot about the aspects you will slightly get a clearer picture of development and if you have read enough and have specialised a bit in some subjects that caught your interest you will develop your own vision about game development and that's where the ball starts to roll.

WhiteX' edited post is where you'd better start instead of developing your own game because creating a mod is DEFINITELY a very good practise to learn where the theory is about and why it's like that.

Note that I'm not stating that everything you'll read on the internet is true (especially the subjective articles), it's the writers perception of a subject like you have your own.
