Net play problem with Mario Kart

me and my friend wanted to play mario kart really bad together so we get on Net play. We make a game and its going smooth. But when the game starts, we are playing 2 different games. He says hes in first and im in 8th when im in first and hes in 8th. Both 8th placers are going into a wall.

We are using the same plugins (no sound, rice 6.1.1) and same resolution.

Does the netplay just not work?
